I am just a little nervous that they (being folding) will pop off the rims.

 

Don't worry.

 

A bicycle tyre's bead is quite interesting and doesn't work like you expect. If you cut it in a few places without damaging the tyre itself too much, you can still inflate the tyre to its normal inflation pressure. The bead holds the tyre by pressing onto the rim, not by preventing the hoop from stretching and popping off because it becomes too big for the rim.

 

However, if you go past sensible inflation pressure (the wider the tyre, the lower the max pressure), then the forces against the rim are no longer what holds it there and it pops off.

 

An interesting experiment is to cut an old tyre as indicated and pump it until it blows off. Remember your safety glasses and ear protectors. Also, put the dog in a boarding kennel, otherwise you'll never see him again.
