I'd say joburg to shlaapstad in that time on a mountain bike unsupported is nearly impossible. On a road bike, on tar roads would be a lot easier. That said, after my trip to pe i promised myself the next one would include some dirt. Not necessarily the wild stuff the epic boys ride on, but just ordinary untarred roads, suitable for 28c tyres or a cyclo cross bike. There are heaps of roads like that in sa.
