Bellscycling Posted March 24, 2009 Share I was Just wondering if you tech boffins help me out here? Which rear wheel would be faster over the ironman coarse in PE? A normal deep section wheel like: Mavic cosmic carbone or Zipp 404? or Or a normal wheel with aero wheel covers (Making it a disc)? If you dont know what I'm talking about: http://www.excelsports.com/new.asp?page=8&description=Wheel+Cover&vendorCode=CHAERO&major=1&minor=24Gawenator2009-03-24 08:17:
Bellscycling Posted March 24, 2009 Share And would the added weight make a huge difference?
Jules Posted March 24, 2009 Share I don't know about the aerodynamics, but I know that weight will make virtually no difference if you do not accelerate frequently and there are no hills.
Fulmenicilus Posted March 24, 2009 Share ... normal wheel with aero wheel covers (Making it a disc)? If you dont know what I'm talking about: http://www.excelsports.com/new.asp?page=8&description=Wheel+Cover&vendorCode=CHAERO&major=1&minor=24 Where can I get hold of it locally? Bringing it in from Excel Sports will cost R2300 - not really a proposition!
gummibear Posted March 24, 2009 Share Deep sections. If the wind blows hard like its been then you wont be able to ride a disk.Make sure you bring some shallow wheels ...just in case.
jagwil Posted March 24, 2009 Share With apologies to Lance Armstrong. It's not about the WHEEL.

This will not work at all the idea of a disc wheel is the stiffness and obviously aerodynamics i can not see these plastic covers doing the trick

So you don't think a disk a option this year? How has the weather been there lately?

gummibear Posted March 25, 2009 Share With PE you never know till the morning of the race.Ride a disc if you have before and know what the handling is like.If not ride what you are used to.
slowtwitch Posted March 26, 2009 Share A disc will always be faster - not sure about covers though. PE wind is no problem for a disc. but as windblown says, you need to have used it before. Only if you're a pansy should you stay away from a disc or if we get a Argus '09 wind blowing. Having said that Zipp's 404 is pretty aero. Weight no issue - you're loaded with gels, bars, bottles, wet shorts and shoes so 200-300g's makes no difference
