I have heard that some people use 10 speed chains on 9 speed gears or the other way around.

What is the actual difference between 10 and 9 speed?

Is the 9 speed gears slightly wider? Are the teeth spacings the same?

Reason why I am asking

I still have 9 speed (105) on my road bike and I would like to upgrade it one day to something lighter - ultegra or dura ace.

I am happy with the 9 gears ratio and all and I have a sram cassette at the back PG970 I think?

What would the biggest weight saver be for me in a component upgrade? In my mind it may be the crankset because this isnt hollowtech.

Could I take a 10 speed dura ace crankset and use it at the front with my current derailer and chain?

Any ideas ? smiley17.gif

As bikes get more gears, chains become narrower. In reality, this only has an effect on cassettes, due to the narrow spacing. On cranks 8/9/10 all seem to work with 10-speed chains. Under some conditions 10-speed chains do skate on top of 9-speed chainrings but this is rare and only affects some people with a particular quirk in shifting technique. Therefore, there are 10-speed specific chainrings (but not cranks, as pointed out). These are not necessary when upgrading.

You can use a Dura Ace crankset as suggested.

I can't help you with the weight questions, I don't weigh things.
