Rather go 2nd hand. You will save loads.

Keep looking under for sale on the hub, but you have to be quick when you find something.

Also check out Gumtree, Ive bought two bikes on gumtree.

Linden Cycles in JHB also have a small range of used bikes.

Good luck

Welcome to the hub, I started about 3 months ago and found the best was to find a local bike store (LBS) that you are happy with as they will become your best friend soon.

BTW where do you live as it helps when asking relavent questions.

On the bike your budget is what I've ended up spending to get started. I would say first get your helmet - your going to pay about R650. There are endless posts on why you cannot buy GAME specials for R99, the most important is your head will feel the difference the day you fall. Also no helmet no ride is the policy with group rides and events.

You will also need those odds like pump (R~R75), bottle and cage (~R60), computer (great for motivation ~ R100), spare tube (R~R45) and lights - rear ~ R60; front ~ R250

As your budget puts you in the better entry level bikes, you will notice that they bike are rather the same: same frames; same gears; same rims; same tyres; same brakes; same forks; same saddles

Keep in mind the two variations on certain parts, tube vs tubelss tyres, and V-brake vs Disk-brakes, that you will find on your budget.

Before other hubbers flame me, I was seriously shopping around in March and the stuff was rather the same (except for the GAME crap Big%20smile ). I ended up buying a GIANT ROCK (R4500) as the bike shop gave me good customer service, the competition had a similar branded bike for R4200 but lacked the customer service I wanted.

Anyway, enjoy as its rather addictive.

Ignore the guys that say you must buy their bikes that they have been trying to flog for how long. Ask the relevant questions and go through all the answers.

Between all the selfish punts you will find the answer you are looking for.

If a hubber does happen to have what you are looking for and that is within your budget send him a PM and remember to ask questions regarding the bike. If possible try and go the the person and look at the bike and parts on the bike. Take it for a spin if you can and then make a decision.

Agree with Onetime. While you can get a far better deal buying 2ndhand, you need to know your stuff first. Its easy to get done in. I bought new as I did not want someone elses problems, but the next time I buy (in a few months) I will consider 2nd hand with knowledge I have picked up.

One important thing, size!!! Make sure you get the correct size for your height.

I'm not so sure what your situation is, but for me I purchased entry level, but good as I want to give my bike to my wife when I buy my next one. My wife will only cycle around the block or a few km's on road. At least I'm getting a few months to decided what I want without having bankrupted myself.
