My XT freehub is making funny noises. And showing signs of wanting to jam. I'll hopefully have time to strip the hub before this arvi's ride, but since I know these things aren't able to be fully rebuilt, my question is: if I ride it like this, will it

a - be fine

b - possibly trash the freehub completely (not such an issue since I'll need to replace it if it's wrecked anyway); or

c - jam completely on a dropoff or similar piece of gnarl and fling me over the bars...

It happens with those freehubs, its not likely to jam but it will get more play and also be getting a very irritating noise that will drive you to get a new one. There are some ways to get it quiet for the meanwhile but its not a lasting fix.

Dont bother stripping it, it is toast. Get a new one.

What can happen?

One, it can jam completely and keep on moving when you stop pedaling, pulling the chain, rolling it over the top and ripping the jockey.

Two: Refuse to engage and thus not allowing you to propel the bike forward.

The former is quite serious, the latter requires nothing more than a long walk home, although it will sporadically engage and test you for how long you can ride without freewheeling.

The latter is the most likely.

Sometimes the right answer isn't the one you wanted to hear... off to the LBS then. Bleh. Thanks for the diagnosis, Dr. Bornman.
