Hi

A friend and I are planning to embark on a slightly different journey

to cycling fashion for a change and need a 'human cart'. Think they

call it a paddy as well. These are fairly expensive and not common in SA at

all. After much consideration, I am going to build them. My biggest

issue is the wheels: To make it more efficient and less complicated,

Lefty Hubs is what I am going to need to use. I have searched the net

and they dont seem all that common.

SO, the questions are:

1.) Can you rebuild a normal rim on a Lefty Hub?

2.) Who would be the cheaper manufacturer, where can I get them?

3.) What can I expect to pay for the bottom-range ones (money would mainly be why we are building our own)

4.) Where can I get exact measurements OR technical drawings of the 'shaft', the bit that the Hub clips on too? I will need to turn this out and fit it to the frame, usually part of the shock.

Many thank-you's!!

A normal rim can be built onto a cantilever (Lefty) hub with no problem.

Wheelchairs use cantilever hubs. There are wheelchair manufacuters in ZA and I'll start looking there for hubs, drawings, etc.

It's a hub where the axle is supported on one side only, like a Cannondale Lefty.

thanks edman. just been googling it. never heard the term.

but, as an aside, what point on a cantilever brake would be considered the end of which the system is supported? holy roller2009-07-08 20:38:24

The pivot point is where it connects to the frame/fork.

Below is a pic from Wikipedia. The top sketch is pretty much how a cantilever hub works. The bottom one represents a cantilever brake: the triangle is the pivot, the circle the brake pad.

Cantilever: noun

A projecting structure, such as a beam, that is supported at one end and carries a load at the other end or along its length.

All car wheels are cantilevered. Many modern motorcycle rear wheels are cantilevered.

In architecture, balconies are often cantilevered and the trend is for shelves to be cantilevered too.

I Think JB is on the money,

Wheelchair wheels will probably set you back a fraction of a lefty wheel.

and the spline/shaft on a lefty is not going to be that easy to fabricate.
