The idea is to get a decent bike to start with, and one that has a good platform to upgrade from at a later stage.

Most of you recon the Schwinn Mesa Disk will do the job, but taking the other bikes into consideration, what would you suggest.

The other option is to keep using my Makro special Mtb untill it falls apart, saving up the bucks in the mean time for this:

Alite 3000 (10.9K)

Bottom Bracket Truvativ GXP outboard cartridge bearing
  Cassette Shimano HG50 11-34, 9-Speed
  Pedals Shimano PD-M505 clipless
  Seatpost Carbon micro-adjust
  Saddle WTB Silverado
Handlebar Truvativ Stylo Race, 31.8, Butted

But then, with the "budget" being bigger I guess my options of bikes are also much bigger....eish, what to do what to do

Go for the best that you can afford now.

You will not regret it once you start riding the bike.

Mesa USD is very decent, hyd brakes and Deore rear changer is good.

I read a bike test on the Mesa a few years back. It rekoned that the frame was the best quality in it's price range. So, as you said, it could be a good platform for future upgrades.

Try and stay away from cable discs. To quote JB - you are getting the worst of both worlds.... (do the search)

for 4K-ish' date=' i'd go for the bike with the hydraulic discs.[/quote']

Yip. Cable discs will give you endless drama that you won't be able to stop cause you have cable disc brakes.

Go with the R4k Mesa. Hyd discs and an established brand name.
