Elwin Posted April 28 Share Looking for some wisdom from fellow hubbers concerning drivetrains (MTB specific) What is the best bang for buck drive train in your experience? What I've read so far is that sram GX is the best value for money. What about shimano XT? And also the lower tier Sram NX? I couldn't find any thing on this in the forum
Me rida my bicycle Posted April 28 Share Your drive trains lifespan all depends on how you treat it. If you keep it clean and replace the chains at the right time you will get 1000's of km's out of any of those 3 groupsets. I'm running XT 12 cassette and chain I'm very happy with it and my boets running full nx 12 for more than a year and he is super happy with it. Supposing the OP d-o-e-s look after his drivetrain as you (rightly) suggest, THEN the question is STILL bang-for-buck, his question remains…. We know of the law(s) of diminishing returns, that an XT (or Ultegra/Road) would be way ‘better’ than say and entry level (Tiagra) Groupo, but that something like Dura Ace is only slightly ‘better’ than XT, at a way- higher price-point… or what…? Mountain Goat Posted April 28 Share Gx with an XX1 chain - you hear of people getting crazy mileage. I use a Shimano XT cassette and XT chain but to be honest all of the 12speed Shimano cassettes are the same you just save some weight as you go up in the range. The nice thing about running a Shimano cassette is that you can buy the 10 and 12t sprocket as a stock item. Because they have the smalest surface area they tend to wear out quicker especially if riding flatter terrain. Replace that along with your chain and you are good to go. I have about 13000km on my XT cassette and I have used about 4 chains and I have replaced the 10 and 12t once.

They work fine for a few months, but then develop play on the mounting bolt of the derailleur and you will have shifting problems.
