Leet, to answer your question.

 

You have a "maximum heart rate" and a resting heart rate. So if your monitor says you are at 100%, that means you are doing excercise at your "maximum".

 

Then you have different %'s inbetween.

 

Now the picture gets blurry depending on what you read and who you talk  to. But in training, you can cycle at 70% for 5 hours, and get fit. Or you can do intervals of say taking your heart rate to 80% for 5 minutes with different rest periods inbetween.

 

YOu can achieve these heart rates either with using "big gears" or by spinning. But the essential thing is what you are trying to achieve. Usually you try to ride under the 80% zone as it means you can ride for longer (might not be faster - but you can last).

 

So I might ride argus at say 60% and it takes me 6 hours, but Onetime riding at 60% would not make the cut off time. The pro's might ride at 60%  and finish in 3 hours.

something else, polar recommends subtracting your age from 221 (i think it is) and using the monitor to estimate the resting hear rate.

 

if it is really important to you the sport institute can put you on a machine and work it out exactly for you.

What I meant was I should be using 70% of 183 which was the max my heart was at today which means i should be doing a avg of 130 bpm
