Hi,

Quick (maybe dumb) question....

I have a 9 speed hub & cluster from a busted up wheel.

I have another wheel which is an 8 speed.

So from what I know, 8 & 9 speed are not compatible....so my question is, can I have the freehub body from the 9 speed transferred to the 8 speed wheel along with the 9 speed cluster?

Thx

If its Shimano, 8, 9, and 10 speed are compatable, except for some 10 speed Dura Ace hubs that are only 10 speed.

Campagnolo are 9 , 10 and 11 compatable.

I have a really old set of Shimano 600 8 speed hubs from the early 90's that can take a modern 10 speed cassette just perfectly.

You can even upgrade an old 7-speed Shimano hub to 10-speed by changing the freehub body and axle (It needs a longer axle). You need a wheelbuilder to do that conversion for you since the wheel then has to be re-dished.

Campag is different in that the 8-speed hubs have different splines to the 9-speed and upwards hubs. Campag bit the bullet and went aluminium, deep-spline in 1993 or or, where Shimano now sits with the dilemma of having to change to a deep spline (in order to have lighter, aluminium freehub bodies) now, 15 years later. The result is some incompatibilities, always a bad thing for bicycle owners like you and I.
