Thats a Cinelli Milano steel track drop stem. They are truly beautiful. So are the bars.

Is that the one with the riveted Cinelli badge on top of the stem? Saw a similar set on ebay a few weeks back sell for $780

Well, almost but not. The one in the pic has an engraving. Quite simple: an elipse and inside on top it says Cinelli and across the bottom it says Milano.

The one with the badge is truly beautiful. I've held four of these in my own hands at once. They are truly magnificent. And yes, you're right they are pricey.

why would you want your stem to be down angled like that?

Pursuit

education required ? pursuit ? why .....? I was reading about tri bars not always being the best to ride long distance with as it closes up your chest. Surely a bar angled like this forces you to close up your chest when you need oxygen the most?

I'm certainly not an expert, but have been made to believe that it was an early innovation for pursuit track cycling, to get the riders head down. Subsequently other novelties were designed like the low pro frame or stems that attached to the crown or crown. In combination with a 650c front fork and wheel.

Maybe somebody else has a more accurate technical insight.

@LeTurbo, you've got an appetite for the good stuff lad.

I'm inquisitive to see your bike room already.

I've also got a feeling that you'll be receiving a PM about the stem on that yellow Colnago.

wha wha we wa!!!!! the deep purple cinelli is my favourite, and the sprayjob on the coppi is too die for. i reckon they spray on top of the crome to give it that reflective look??

Monkeyboy, your last post leads me to a question; I need some opinions. I've been thinking of turning the Le Turbo into a fixie.

Why? I don't know that it's particularly collectable, despite Robbie MacIntosh having ridden one in the 1983 Rapport Toer (there's pic of him on one at Soloped Cycles) - although it is South African history.

There's nothing rare or desirable on it apart from the saddle (Selle Italia) - derailleurs are Sachs Huret Eco, cranks are Stronglite, wheels are late 90's Mavic with Shimano hubs.

And finally, though I do like a patina of age on my bikes, she really is in fairly rough condition (the decals were badly applied and became wrinkled and skew), as well as a few bad fall-overs when I tried cleats instead of clips.

I was thinking she could be quite interesting with a wood veneer and marquetry, and stitched leather bars like the Cinelli featured earlier ...
