I know this is a very old post, but just experienced the same problem yesterday when using EntryTime.

Entered 2 Teams for the Van Gaalens 24 Hours, paid R3,700 entry fee and was charged a R111 Admin Fee by EntryTime!!!!

I think this is a total rip off, and yes I had the choice to not enter, but I have already collected entry fees from 20 people who are psyched up for the event! What is this fee for,I used my credit card?? Never been charged an Admin Fee for other events, if this is the norm will not enter any races using EntryTime in future!!

SOMEONE IS MAKING BAGS FULL OF MONEY. !!!!!!

You will be surprised. Obviously I am not talking for all events as there are lots that are making bags of money, but, I saw the figures for an event that happened recently. They had about 500-600 entrants, relatively low cost (120 i think), and once we had discounted all the costs related to online entry fees, Admin, medical, fencing etc etc they made hardly anything. Total income was in the region of 70k. Ok they had a sponsor, but even off all their costs were covered by the sponsor. They are not making a pile of money. In fact a fair number of these event organisers dont make any profit at all. Interesting fact was that of that 70k - they had to hand over about 15k to CSA. So my point is - dont paint all event organisers with the same brush. I personally only try support those events that are not trying to bend me over

EDIT - didnt realise this thread had been raised from the dead

i owned a store for many years and although I initially didn't want the cc facilities, I ended up having to take them simply because the majority use cc to purchase goods. The rate from the bank was initially 6%, but after a few years came down to 4%. when it came to paying, people often asked me for discounts, so I just offered them 5% for cash which was more or less what I would've paid the bank out anyway. i think having the machine was the best thing ever for me, payments guaranteed, no large cash amounts on hand (which always stressed me out!), banking so much easier, machines always updated regularly and/or sorted quickly when not working properly.

one thing that always struck me though, is how nonchalant people are with their credit card and details. many cards got left by me, i phone the client to let them know, and they only come in 2 or 3 days later only! or they happily phone in and give me all the details I need over the phone, or scribble them down on a piece of paper and fax it through. lucky for them i only had 2 very trustworthy staff.

if i go into a store now and get told i have to pay a "handling" fee, i explain nicely why i'm going to their opposition simple as that - vote with your wallet.
