I just picked up a bike with all black finishing on it except for the rims and was wondering if it was advisable to spray them or have them sprayed, and if I was going to attempt to do it myself, how to go about it?

I am not too pedantic about the finish as long as it doesn't start peeling after a week like one of those home jobby window tintings you see on taxi's. Oh ya disc break wheels so no issues with the sidewalls of the rims.

I sprayed a set long time ago. Just removed the stickers, sprayed on a primer, and then sprayed it black. Normal can spray.

Have you thought of anodising? I have no idea if it would work and the costs involved in striping the rims etc, but I should imagine a better and more durable finish.

you'll have to dissemble either way. i.e pull the spokes and nipples. If you have eyelets its difficult to cover each one as not to coat it, if you want to keep them natural.

If its stripped you have a lot of choices: pro-spray, home spray (can works perfectly) powder coating is cool but may dull and get scratched, or even vinyl pro job(can even be printed in rad ways)

I guess it depends on your budget.

i have just sprayed my rims for my fixie,  first clean and light sand, clean again with thinners, never primed, just used quick dry white duco for background then put a light dusting of pearlwhite, finally put about three coats of 2k clear on top. look sweet, hopefully have them have them laced up on monday. Wink
