I have just bought a old aluminium MTB that I wanna spruce up with a new paint job for the frame and suspension fork. But don't really know how to go about doing this.

I assume step one is to remove the old paint with paint stripper but what then? Do you need primer? Is it possible to get a durable finish using cans of spray paint covered with a few layers of clearcoat or do I need to use a compressor and proper spray gun? I don't have access to the later so if this is the right path to follow can anyone recommend someone who will do this for me in Port Elizabeth for a reasonable fee? I don't need any fancy graphics or anything, just one solid color, most probably black.

Well first step is too strip the old paintwork down, first chemically and then by hand, getting rid of any stubborn paint flecks. Then you can start the spraying. If memory serves, you will need a primer.

It's best if you can get a access to a compressor and spray gun, you could get from a tool hire place, nothing finishes better. Pop into your local paint shops, they'll give you loads of advice at to what paint, and even who could spray for you.

Yes you can use can spray and then 2 or 3 coats clear and you must use a under coat. Most importend is to let each coat cure proppely.

If you do not want anything fancy the go powder coating.

Otherwise, make sure it is clean from all paintstripper. Use propper rattle can paints and primers. Not the no name brands from P'nP. A few nice coats of clear and if it is not shiny enough then just give it a sand with 1200 water sandpaper and polish it with polishing compound.
