which tyre?

Needing some advice.

I currently have a damaged crossmark lust on my back wheel, which needs replacing today Cry

However, in a few months I am doing the desert dash and would like to have my equipment ready for that ride.

A couple of questions.

1. If I replace the crossmark lust with another one, will it still be ok to ride at the DD considering that I am wanting to put alot of miles of training in.

2. Is there another all round tyre I could put on that would be an upgrade from the lust? I am not the racing type  - but more a hacker who enjoys all round riding.

3. Would it be worth buying a cheaper tyre to ride (train) on and then getting the lust in december?

(oh yes, I am planning on getting a new front tyre in december).

1. Yes. Should be good for a good few thousand km, so unless you are doing X000km per month until the race...

2. Yes. But DD is fairly flat and dry/dusty isn't it ? You could get specialist tyres for this (SpeedKings, Crows, Ralph, Maxxlite, Fred's etc), but Crossmarks are pretty good for this (especially on the back), are cheaper than many of these, and will no doubt last longer

3. No.

thanks Ninja - DD is flat in terms of riding on a secondary road, but it is rolling hills. Not going to bother with a cheaper option then.

In terms of training - I am hoping to get in upwards of 1000km per month.

FYI - I started tracking all my consumables and parts with SportTracks, and so far have the following for 2008/9:

Schwalbe Racing Ralph: 2960/2864 km
Schwalbe Rocket Ron:       438/334 km
Maxxis Maxxlite:                 510/465 km
Maxxis Crossmark:         2755/2755 km

All of these tyres I'd consider to still be *Not Out.
All of these are non-UST, or tubed (running tubeless)

The one Ralph, and Crossmark (the ones that were on the back) are the most worn, and have not got a lot of tread, BUT still work fairly well (except maybe in mud).

Crossmarks are great all round tyres for drier riding. They are perfect for rolling district roads that you will have in Namibia.

Slow, ask LBS or around for "2nd hand Crossmarks". I got mine like that. A lot of guys buy new bikes and then immediately toss the Crossmarks that come with it.

I got mine for R250 each and the only dirt they saw was at the LBS lying underneath his counter.
