This goes out to all those who complain about cyclists ?behaving badly?:

Cycling is an activity, not an identity.

Cycling doesn?t define who you are as a person.

No one cares if you think cycling is the centre of your universe.

Other people don?t see you as a cyclist, they see you as just another person.

Other cyclists don?t share YOUR view of what the image of the sport should look like.

The general public isn?t even aware that the sport is an entity with an ?image?.

Thus, no one can give the sport a ?bad name?, because the general public needs to actually give a damn about something before they can have a view on it.

So stop being so touchy about other cyclists doing ?wrong? in your eyes, because as much as you think it might be, the so-called offense is not a personal attack on your identity as a person.

.

Kamikaze, whether you like it or not, people are lumped together in groups. These groups are tarred with the same brush -  by most people.

Do you have a problem with taxis, or one taxi driver? Do you distrust politicians, or only the one that you know?

In a perfect world, your argument may hold water, but not on this planet.

so the 3 year old in the complex is a "cyclist behaving badly" when he rides on the wrong side of the driveway.

or the mafuta riding to work is "giving the sport a bad name" becasue he's not wearing a helmet?

people stereotype themselves.

cyclists want to be known as cyclists, becasue it means somethig to them, then when their pseudo identity gets attacked, they freak out.

all your friends talk about "you cyclists" because there is WAY too much spandex in the world.

I must admit all road users (99.999999999999999%) don't obey the rules of the road - so as long as you don't endanger yourself or others while disobeying road rules where is the problem in RSA, We all know the cops only do: speed control, running red lights, above the legal alcohol limit, and sometimes road worthy vehicles!

When last did you see:

1 . A pedestrian stopped and arrested for J walking, or walking through a red man robot?

2. A motorist arrested for crossing a solid barrier line or driving in the right line in free flow traffic as apposed to passing in the right lane? Keep left (regardless of the speed limit) pass right!

3. A cyclist coming to a dead stop and 1 foot out the pedal at a stop street before the line?

So as all (99.999999999999%) road users brake the rules, does it give a fellow road user the right to deliberately injury another road user? But for some obscure reason certain motorist - we have seen the Facebook groups - seem to target cyclist, and sometimes for no reason other than they are in humane idiots! Sometimes disobeying road rules is safer in certain circumstances than obeying them as stated in a previous post!

Rules are for the guidance of wise men and for fools to follow!
