I haven't ridden at the Monument in ages but am keen to go ride there.

Are the trails still in good condition and what is the cost? Is it still safe to ride around there?

Hey,

I was there about 2 years ago...... trails started to look "unmaintained".  I spoke to a lady from the monument, as I wanted to build a DH track.  She said that they are busy building a MTB track that should be open by the 9th of November......  So maybe it might be worth while checking out?

Just had it confirmed. My boss is on the board of the monument.

It was discussed at a recent meeting - they are building new tracks. Should launch somewhere in November - can't wait.!

Rode there 3 or 4 weekends ago.

Very rocky, never-ending climbs if you wish, even a few realy techn. single track sections. Very safe(all the building eareas of the Gautrain has been completly fenced-off.

The cost is R15 per person, but if you are what they call "'n Friend van die Monument" it's for free

Sounds perfect, thanks. Will hopefully be riding there tomorrow afternoon. Will take some pics so that the other Hubbers can see what it is like.

I'll try.

What I know so far is that the design was done by a chap by the name of Len Dekker and that it has cost quite a bit to build.

I'm not sure if my employer will know exactly what I mean if I ask about XC or DH tracks...

I went to check out the route today. I paid R50 to become a "Friend of the Monument" which gives me free entrance until March next year. I think it is R120 per annum.

I never managed to find the start of the trail. I think I last rode there about 10 years ago and everything looks a lot different now. All I can recall is that we used to start by riding down the stairs of the amphitheatre but we couldn't even find that today although I saw it from the road. There are no cycle route signboards whatsoever. Unhappy

I eventually managed to hop onto the dirt and it was rocky and fairly hilly. I rather enjoyed it though! Got lost once but managed to find the route again. I had forgotten just how steep that one downhill section was. Definitely not a route I would recommend for novices or a family outing.

I somehow missed the turnoff to get to the bottom parallel to Eufees and eventually my nice dirt road became a tarred incline. I saw quite a bit of game which surprised me. I then met up with a friend and we went to the top of Fort Skanskop. Nice view from up there! We ran out of time and didn't get to explore any further but I'm definitely going back.

I never saw any sign of the new route they are building but the guys at the gate said they were working on something. I took some pics and will upload some when I get a chance.

Anyone able to give me directions to the start of the trail?

Nice one M.

Shocked you may not claim to be the current holder of the juju without any proof on the fall/Lie down thread.

Unfortunately can't provide proof as I don't think the mods will approve of me posting a pic of one of my mammary glands. It connected with the bar end Ouch
