I read somewhere that the 6700's do work with older components.

However the 7900's dont.

Bit weird that the one would work and the other one not though since they are similiar technology.

You see I want to upgrade gradually, I know it's more expensive in the long run, but it's harder for the wife to track down.  Big%20smile

Compatibility

The new brake cable pull geometry means pairing the new levers with existing brakes will yield a particularly firm feel with less power than intended but it'll still work. Unlike Dura-Ace, however, the new levers are fully backwards compatible with older derailleurs and vice-versa as there was no major change to the front derailleur cable pull ratio. Likewise, chainring and cassette spacing use the same 10-speed standard as before so those are interchangeable with older versions as well.

They do work together, the only thing is the new 7900 front shifter has no trim operation like the7800 lever so if you're gonna run the 7900 shifters the only thing you have to get as well is a front derailleur.

The 6700 Ultegra has a trim operation so this is not an issue...
