I use SPD's on both MTB & Road. I'm using a pair of MTB shoes with solid soles, so I doubt if one will feel a big difference between this and road pedals/shoes. With SPD's your feet can twist a little bit while clipped into the pedal, not sure if this is the case with road pedals?

More aerodynamic shoe? Fact? Really?

yes' date=' and you go faster with socks on your shoes, actually socks upto your knees

Which would be cancelled our by my not-so-aerodynamic belly Embarrassed

Stiffer more aerodynamic shoe' date=' bigger/wider platform pedal gets more power transferred with each pedal stroke. FACT!!

[/quote']

There are very stiff MTB shoes available.

Power transfer has got nothing to do with the platform size.

As long as the pedal does not flex there will be no power lost.

The shoe provides the platform in any case, not the pedal.

More aerodynamic??? Are you serious?

Perhaps on top pro level where milliseconds start to count; I if you are really worried about the aerodynamics of your shoes, fit some of those funny looking overshoes / booties. Even the pros only wear that for TT.

More chance of hot feet? Don't buy this either.

Only true if you have very flexible shoes.

With a stiff sole, the shoe provides the platform.

Never heard that hot feet syndrome is more common with MTBers.

The specific make up of your feet determine if you are likely to suffer from hot foot syndrome. This can be cured by using the correct shoe and inner sole set up.

Still waiting for some good reasons why road pedals are better and/or gives better performance than SPDs,  supported by sound arguments.

I'll bite: stack height and cornering clearance.  Important if you corner with a mm of clearance.  SA has no criteriums, though.

So, do I win a smartie? Tongue

Personally, I changed because I kept on unclipping from SPDs when sprinting.  I'm not sure that that's a problem for everyone.

Thanks Barend

Can't argue with you about that.

Just sold and posted the only pair of road pedal I owned to a Hubber, so can't check the difference. While I suspect that you are correct, there can't be much difference in cornering clearance though and as you say there is not much crit racing in SA. Most of us mere mortals don't pedal through tight corners in any case.

Further, the clearance advantage of road pedals is offset against the convenience of double sided clipping on SPDs.

I agree with ML. Logic says the point of pressure is the inside of the shoe not the pedal.

I use SPD's on my MTB, Road and Tri bike. Hell I even did Ironman with MTB shoes and long fingered gloves, but that's probably more because I'm half savage and half gypsy and have no sense of decorum.

Like the bike, it's probably also not about the shoes.

It hurts to take your bike to the shop to buy milk when you are wearing slops?

Shimano has a solution to that one too...

Clips into one side of your SPD  (and you still have the other side to clip if you want).

But then I don't use my road bike to go shopping; My old hybrid is better suited for that job and much less likely to attract unwanted attention while parked outside the shop...
