We were out riding on that road Saturday morning, and came upon the scene about an hour after it happened. There was a policeman there, but no ambulance. Shocking scence.... My friend riding with me is a medical Dr and checked Bennie out, but it was much too late.

It was not near the silos, it was relatively close to the 4-way stop on the Klipheuwel road, which is a relatively quiet road with a wide yellow lane. No idea how something like this could happen.

Very sad... My heart goes out to his family.

A couple of us living in Stellenbosch and training for Ironman will from now on hire a car to drive behind us during training. Anyone interested to join in please PM me.

Deepest condolences to the family.

Also fail to see how this could happen where it happened. I use roads with yellow shoulders as much as possible, thinking you have plenty space. I mean, it's not as if it was that horrible little piece of road past Fisantekraal.

Subsequently, and I can understand it, she-who-must-be-obeyed banned me from solo riding, after seeing the article in the Burger. Which sortof leaves me up the creek, but that's my prob.

I feel so sorry for the families of these unfortunate souls that get taken out on our roads.  I have just heard that Graham English got knocked at the top of Llandudno yesterday afternoon at 16h00.  Luckily, he survived an 80 km/h hit by a driver who crossed the yellow line.  Recover well, Graham.  The City, PPA, Clubs, and any other stakeholder need to get together and work through what is becoming a crisis.  BTW, I noticed that they are laying spped bumps down Valley Road in Hout Bay to counteract the speed with which these idiots drive down there.  I suspect this was initiated and driven by the local equestrian community and the International School.  A good example of action being taken.

So, so sad.  That used to be almost my daily training route. Just terrible news.  My wife told me about it and she also mentioned that it could easily have been me (or any of my riding buddies.)  Not that makes it any better, but it just hits close to home.

My deepest condolences to his family.

R.I.P. Sir, we still use this road on a daily basis and have had a few close shaves with drivers screaming past as close as they can to us, not nice.

May you be cycling in the clouds forever.

RIP indeed.I am concerned with the lack of respect that motorists shows cyclists on Cape Town roads. Our representing bodies make a lot of noise arounf tragedies then it dies away. But I also ask' date=' when are cyclist going to take responsibility for their own lives by making a bigger noise about what we want?

What exactly can we do in order to "make bigger noise"?

I realise I'm worth more alive than dead, but besides for riding as safe as possible and the odd newspaper letter (and regular debates about adhering to traffic rules with fellow cyclists), I don't really know what I CAN do?

Are there any ideas?

If we come up with some action points, it'll be easier to try and execute some form of strategy instead of thinking there should be something to do...

Are there other threads that discuss this?

I saw on the PPA website how they gave money to development.

So, Now the Challange is, Will the PPA spend money on a full half page Ride Safe campaign in our larges newspapers>

Cape Times, Argus, Beeld, Burger and Volksblad.?

I guess not, because they are not really interested in standing up in the media for cyclist. Thats why they had that stupid response regarding the latest incident.

They will say they are busy, busy doing nothing.

The "march" to parliament last year, achieved what?

I am doing something about the current situation.

This makes me mad, amazes  me how people are shocked and horrified, how can this happen????? poor Bennie was having a good ride on his own enjoying himself. All of a sudden he was dead, out of the blue dead. There was no cause for it, nothing, there wasn't even a drunk F@cker with a blue Jetta in site, nothing...... Now he's dead

Hello, stop being so F@cking ignorant ,adress the culture of drivers in this country, can't you see it!!!!!!

The bostErd should be hanged,

Probably has the intellegence of a hosepipe.

But remember he has rights!!!!!

Sick man , sick

I'm sure this has been discussed many a time before, but why don't we start riding on the other side of the road?

It seems to work for runners (yes, I know it's easier to jump on a pavement when running) and it could have a dual purpose. Firstly, since you're facing the oncoming traffic, you should see any yellow-line drivers and hopefully have enough time to take evasive action. And secondly, it can be a way of showing the authorities and other stakeholders that we?re not standing for their lack of action any longer.

As an aside, this is my first post to thehub, so please be gentle when telling me exactly how stupid the idea is
