I have been toying with a couple of questions in my head but I dont know what is the right choice.

I ride a RC9000 which is my training/racing/commuting bike.

I am happy with it, it is light and I enjoy my time with it.

It is still 9 speed, 34/50 and 11-21.

It already has 10 speed derailers.

So today a bought 2nd hand 7800 shifters and chain.

So now I have a pretty easy swap over to 10 speed (I do have a 10 speed cassette as well at home)

I have another old road bike lying at my friends house. It is a steel frame Lejuene in good nick with downtube shifters and the original components etc.

It is 7 speed, with a double chain ring.

And then finally I have a ridley 56cm frame and full carbon look fork (my old frame).

Question time.

What should I do with my 9 speed components now?

I have got plenty of life in it, the cassette is only a month old and it is working well.

1. Ride it until the groupset is dead. And then only put on the 10 speed.

2. Sell the groupset, although I am not going to get much money for it.

3. Build up my ridley again with the 9 speed parts, although I dont have loads of money to build up a new bike.

4. Put the parts on the lejuene.

if answer 4. Would a 9 speed cassette fit on there if it is 7 speed now?

Would it be wiser to leave the old bike in its original form?

or should I just forgot about the heritage stuff and start commuting on it rather?

5. Sell the 9 speed goods, ridley & lejuene (do people want these old bikes)

The 10spd Dura Ace is nice to have.

Seeing as you have already got it, you may as well do the upgrade.

But dont expect any increase in performance.

Maybe in your head you will feel faster every time you look down and see Dura Ace - that's gotta count for something.  Cool

Convert the Le Jeune to a single speed and gain immeasurable 'cool factor' points. Cool Cool

Have your Ridley rebuilt with your 9spd bits and donate it to development cycling and gain even more 'cool factor' points. Cool Cool Cool Cool

With his single speed Cool or woolen Embarrassed post?

or both Wacko ?

Guys, can a 9 speed cassette fit on the le juene if I took the 7 speed off?

Lets say I stuck with the 7 speed, would I be able to get spare parts?

Wont I be able to use a modern 9/10 speed rear DR on there?

Because surely the amount of cable being pulled is governed by the shifter?

Would the chain not be too wide then though?

But then I may be able to use a 9 speed chain ?

Sorry with both...

You could put the 9sp stuff on the Lejuene However it would require some major mods to the rear hub, possibly a new hub, and you would have to reset the rear chainstays as the 7sp axle is quite a bit narrower than the 9sp...

You could use a 9/10sp der on there with the 7sp shifter,With regards to the chain a 9 sp der would be better for clearance, or you could use an 8sp chain-They are more or less the same width as 7sp.

7sp parts are hard to come by these days so you would have to hunt around if you were stick with it...
