My brake honks badly on the front wheel but is silent on the rear.

I have Easton Tempest II's and have fitted brand new Swiss Stop Yellow pads.

The rear is perfect but the front make a racket... is there a better way to align them? Making the back make contact first instead of square on or something?

Wacko

I think it's supposed to be toe of pad must touch first, or maybe the other way round.... Try that, or maybe just clean the rim?

Since it's the front and the rim approaches from behind the caliper, the heel would theoretically be the first bit to hit. I had thought this only served to "clean" the rim slightly before proper pads engagement, but I think it may help with the squeal.

I don't think there is any residue on the rim... but what could I clean it with? Brake cleaner too harsh?

The leading edge (i.e. forward edge) of the brake pad should hit the rim first. In this case, the twisting force about the pad mounting sort of pulls the pad away from the rim.

If the trailing edge (heel) hits first then the twisting force pulls it into the rim. This causes the brake to vibrate which is one of the causes of brake squeal.
