Thanks for your enquiry. Here's the Durban story. Each time I advertise the Jhb or Cape Town course, the Durban guys squeal. Each time my response is the same - contact me with a suitable date and a starting number of candidates, and I'll do my best to come to your city. Each time surf comes up and they get distracted.

 

Doing this course off-site is not trivial. At my Jhb studio I have 6 workbenches, each with their own basic tools and a large pool of general tools. There's a compressor, vices, parts wash facilities, electric everything and more.

 

When I do the courses remotely, I'm restricted to about 120kgs of equipment in one crate. That I freight to my destination a couple of days before I fly. I've tamed the conference centres to not freak out when they smell oil or see dirty hands and I've learnt how to make do with local facilities.

 

To duplicate all that for Durban would require some effort but, I'm mobile and can do.

 

Have a look at my committed schedule on the website. Choose a date you think is suitable and discuss the options with me. I'd like to have a presence in KZN but I'm clueless as to what you guys would consider a suitable place to hold the course etc.

I'm just worried that your market is too small for a local version. Prove me wrong.

Durban people are always fickle in making their minds up. They cant commit to anything, very strange indeed. I'll do my best to try and drum up some support and people. Maybe its the cost of the training that puts people off, I cant seem to get my head around it. Maybe for Durban a shorter/cheaper course?

Shorter and cheaper courses don't work. Been there, done that. One way to make it shorter is to cut out sections. Pick your choose: Shall I cut out BBs? Gears perhaps? Skip brakes altogether?

 

Another way to make it shorter is to just do demonstrations. My experience is that these don't work either. I can sell them, but the students inevitably never go and practice what they've seen and the money is wasted. I don't waste people's money.

 

My way is learn, do. Learn, do. Learn, do. This way everyone gets to try it for themselves. We repeat until we succeed and the end result is the confidence to tackle the jobs by yourself.

 

I take small groups and give individual attention and that costs money, especially when the class is out-of-town.

I have migrated the class to a much larger venue in Belville and thus have a few more spaces available.

 

I'll also be conducting a wheelbuilding course on Wednesday and Thursday 6 and 7 October. This will be the last of these two courses in Cape Town for 2010.
