I have an old Eddy Merckx MX Leader Columbus steel framed bike and and it looks like someone dropped something on the top tube which now has a small dent in it.

The dent is amost unnoticable unless you know it is there - about the sise and shape of a finger nail - shallow and about 7-10 mm across.

Firstly, is it dangerous, I suspect not ?

Second, who would be best to repair it ? I suspect one would have to remove and replace the tube.

Any advice from the gurus would be welcome.

thx

sure it will be fine. I think you have two options:

leave it or fix it by filling with body filler, sand smooth and repaint, I'd not do anything more than that and you'll never know it was there.

That is what i planned to do. See if Cycleart can do an EVEN BETTER job this time

Any danger in not replacing the tube ?

I cant see that it would be. Steel is real :) those bikes are really strong. A top tube would fail in a crumple as it is under compressive stress. The dent would have to be pretty deep and pretty large to really make any serious affect on the strength.

Leave it as it is ,very strong and safe frame had one ,written off -head on with a car .Was to expensive to repair-(back to Belguim for a tube replacement).

Best frame i had.

Leave it as it is

Is this safe ? I suspect it is, but would not want to be wrong ..........

Must be honest, I think I agree with you. It is certainly very different from my S-works tarmac, but I am not sure that in 16 years time someone will cycle up to me and say "nice bike" if I am on it.

The Merckx is special.....
