fat bikes - any good on sand...?

I've met a guy in Alaska that builds "snow bikes" under the brand FatBack. He told me that they sell some in Australia for riding in sand.

Thinking of cycling through Namibia next July from Vioolsdrif to Ruacana.

Wondering if I should import one of these babies... Any thoughts?

If nothing else, these are by far the coolest looking bikes I've ever seen. Seen a single speed version with a belt drive while I was there!!

Thats a hardcore looking bike

I remember years ago there was a Hanebrink bike which was advertised for riding on the beach, but it had much fatter and smaller diameter wheels than this one in the pic.

This one looks more versatile at least - you'll be able to ride it on a normal trail I'm sure.

Just Googled it and found that Hanebrink I was thinking about:

You will need lots of spare tyres and those look expensive and heavy.

I have seen what that area does to hiking boots so tyres will also suffer.

Goodluck in your adventure.

Also look at the Surly Pugsley. It's fork is designed to fit a 135mm rear wheel (singlespeed or geared)

There are plenty of fatbikes on MTBR.com

Very cool looking bike, but that front fork looks a bit skinny.

What do you reckon you could possibly get up to in deep sand/snow that could warrant a beefier fork?

top speed must be like 10kmph!!

Ed Zackery, snow riding only, no trails riding as someone else suggested.

Some of the hard core snow bikers ride them all year round, so it can do trails too

Bikes are surprisingly light too, just worried about thorns, cause the tyres are thin. Don't think you get them tubeless...

HANEBRINK is still making all terrain bikes in addition to the new electric hybrid. The original fat tire bike is now faster than ever. Dan has raced these pedal only bikes in cross country mountain bike races in Big Bear and downhill races in Mammoth.

I still ride my fully rigid pedal only HANEBRINK on local trails and to commute around town and I am faster than the majority of my riding partners riding traditional mountain bikes.

I have incredible reviews from both Mountain Bike Action and Bicycling Magazine if you are interested in learning more about the pedal only HANEBRINK. also check out www.fortunehanebrink.com for current contact information.

The website only refers to the "electric" version. Where can I get the specs / info on the "pedal only" version? Where did you get the bike from?

Can you post a pic?
