Ian J , when a Power Link fails it could trash your drive train,we saw it happen a plenty at the Epic. Just think about it.We replaced rear derailers, front derailers chain rings and some riders  whom suffered failure instructed us to replace there complete drive train and keep it all Shimano. If Shimano thought that Power Link was fail safe they would have brought it onto the market long ago.

Thanks steven, I guess then that the damage would be caused by the broken Power Link passing through the rest of the Drive Train.

ok now got it fitted is was easy hell man too easy is it suppose to be like that ??? and that trick with the chain in the parrafin really got the chain super clean.

Just one more Question please i measured the chain with a imperial rule and just wanted to know if i am on the right track ?? plase see pics

pic 1 i pushed the rule up against the link and started counting from the first pin after the rulers edge and counted 24 pins. the foot ended exactly on the last pin . Would i be correct in saying my chain is still ok ???

Thanks for all the help !!!

Personally I have never heard anyone directly complain about Powerlinks or Connex links on a chain.  I have been running chain links ever since I bought my MTB's and on the road bike for the past 7 years.  Never had a problem - but haven't run a Shimano chain for a very long time!  Perhaps the problem is with the chain rather than the links?

don't know if you're asking me or linnegra. never paid too much attention to my chains until tonight - keep em clean with a park tool thingie - and they get replaced when paul (he's the lbs mech boy who used to work for barloworld) says they should, but just checked: it's hyperglides on all the bikes from the trek roadie (9 speed) to the trance (9 speed) to the singlespeed (not a 9 speed)

don't have any experience with 10 speed chains.....but have always used sram powerlinks on shimano (and sram) chains and even a a KMC chain on the singlespeed - never had a problem and never even heard of a problem from anyone else.

obvioulsy the shimano guy doesnt want you to buy a sram product...

I just wanted to know do you or dont you get 9 speed or 10 speed powerlinks.

I was in a LBS on the weekend and they gave me one that is stamped 9 speed and said one size fits all.

now a few months ago i fitted a powerlink (not sram)i could not get sram but it was the silver one cant remember the name. its on the thread here somewhere.

now why i pose this question again is cos my bike started making these funny noises like the gears were jumping and it was freaking me out.

so i took my red baby in to the local guys here and had the chain replaced and they told me that the powerlink on my hg chain was causing the troubles.

so i had the shimano pin fitted that came with the chain. Can the pin be re used or do i have to get new ones every time i remove the chain .(i remove it often to clean the chain) ???

thanks
