Honda gearbox revealedBy Jez Loftus

Honda G Cross (Andrew McGibbon?.)

The secret is finally out and the contents of Honda's G-Cross have been revealed in an exclusive interview for MTBcut.tv.

When Honda announced that the G-Cross team will not be continuing into 2008 one of the immediate questions was will we ever get to look into that famous box? Notoriously secretive about the working of the G-Cross, Pandora's box is almost a bit of an anticlimax after five years waiting. We were hoping for a rabid hamster on a wheel or some sort of golden glow a la 'Pulp Fiction'

The system basically comprises of a drive crank, chained through what looks to be a reworked derailleur running onto a regular cassette. Check out MTBcut.tv for the interview.

With the G-Cross team disbanding in 2008 and Honda's policy of destroying its prototypes, it's unlikely that the gearbox (or the bikes) will ever become available to the public ... unless someone else wants to try.

At least they devised a lightweight carbon fibre gearbox housing that was well suited for the rough environment of downhill racing. Although nothing exciting the configuration seemsed to have worked. It is imprtant to know that since the first safety bicycle the bicycle concept of crank, chain, chainwheel and rear sproket (cassete) drive has stayed unchanged.

ja, the secret was out a few years ago - but they never really said what was in the original gearbox in 2004 - that was a CVT transmission - I think you didn't even need to pedal to get the bike moving, you could just rock the cranks back and forth and it would go.....too much maintenance I heard.....

[/quote']Now there is a bike I want. Don't pedal - just think about pedalling and "rock the cranks back & forth". I guess if you rock them faster (but don't pedal) it goes faster??LOL
