Dear All,

I am a Argus D group rider nothing to hard core but I have been hunting high and low to find a cycling specific pro trainer in JHB north area preferably to get me fit enought to tackle le tape du tour 2011 and especially my climbing legs as we get to tackle Col du telegraph, col du galibier and Alp du huez in 109 kms of pain.

I have emailed Rob Mackintosh 4 times and he still hasnt got back to me so I doubt he is the man i am looking for. I have looked at a couple of others however they are just 'trainers' with little cycling specific knowledge and in depth experience to measure lactate threshold, power training etc.

Does anyone know of a trainer or can help?

You got L'Etape entry?! Lucky bstard...

I rode up those climbs lastyear as they are also part of "La Marmotte" and I can tell you you neeed to be able to ride at threshold for hours on end. Climbing for 20km's takes a steady tempo and a strong head. It is an incredibly beautiful route. Enjoy it and don't take it too seriously. Just adapt your speed and ride at your own tempo.

I'm not doing L'Etape or Marmotte this year, but a friend of mine has decided we're doing the Galibier challenge this year. Climbing it from four sides. I'm scared.

I've been using these guys for about 5 years now:

Thy're based in Paal/CT but that shouldn't be to much of a problem with internet and all.

I was preferably looking for someone in JHb who I can get tested with, check weight, power progress etc little diificult if he is in PE

Wow, at 60kg's you'll fly up there! I carried waaaay more more and survived. Just...

I would advise a compact crankset at least and if your ego allows it, a tripple would be even better. I would never attempt it on a normal crankset (and I used to noly own one in SA where you don't even need a compact!). Don't listen to anyone who tells you you can do it on a normal crankset - they have probably never have climbed these mosters themselves.

Yip, gotta agree with the compact, even a triple will be ok and won't be frowned upon.

I have never been up those monsters in the Alps, but am scheduled to do so this year.

I did a few tough ones here in South Holland and Belguim and they were dam hard, normal crank just won't do, unless you don't like your knees and have good grip on your cleats for when you dismount ;)

thanks i was contemplating a compact or normal and maybe a triple ....now i will def got with a compact and then closer to the time maybe a triple. thanks a ton for the assistance, for a extra 5grams i think a triple might be best to carry incase of an emergency, esp as we dont have really big hills here in South africa.
