I am going to be coming home to Durbs in April. Its going to be about 1 month into the racing season here when I leave for S.A and about 2 + 1/2 months into the season when I get back to the U.K

Currently I race at E/1/2 Level and a 3 week break off the bike is not an option so going to be bringing the bike to keep the base miles in and to try and do some top end stuff.

I have never ridden in S.A and not sure on how safe it is riding on your own like it is here in North Wales. Does anyone know some safe routes to ride or even local clubs that I can maybe tag along with to get some miles in with during the week etc?

If anyone can help out with routes or give me some ideas of people I can get in touch with over there would be appreciated,

Cheers,

Doobz

e2a: Sorry forgot to add that its road routes/clubs..

I'm sure I saw a cycle route from Blue Lagoon to Durban beachfront and round the Moses Mabida soccer stadium (where there is a cycle lane on the road).

I visit Durban every now and then from Moz and join in with the guys at the Suncoast Casino. But the best thing to do is to contact Cycle Lab at +27315634333 or email neil@cyclelab.com and ask them when it is that they get out. Groups normally meet between 5 and 6 during the week, and there's also a 7km circuit dedicated bike lane until 07:00 around the golf course starting from the swimming pool towards Blue Lagoon, and just in front of the Moses Mabida Stadium. The guys do their intervals around that circuit. Then on weekends there are 100´s of cyclists, many starting off from the Casino, riding towards Ballito and back. If you want to bale out along the route to Ballito you just turn around and hook up with another group. The groups then normally meet at the Mugg and Bean afterwards at the Casino to replenish the kj's they lost. Riding in Durbs is very lekker.

The inland Amashova route is great as there is not much traffic. Most guys start in Hillcrest and head up Bothas Hill to Inchanga then through Camperdown toward Ashburton. You can head to Pietermaritzburg via Polly Shorts Hill and come back via Fox hill. Its a nice hilly route about 110km long and very scenic. Give us a shout if you want to discover the route.

If you are coming to KZN, why not ditch the road bike for some mountain biking?

Giba Gorge is a good option but Karkloof, outside Howick best damn riding in South Africa.
