I am of the opinion that the organizing cost is "fix" regardless of the amount of entrants.

So why charge i.e. Xterra this weekend R300 per entrant + R100 late entry charge.

No road closure needed. Rehidrate is the sponsor so they pitch with large quantity of drinks.

So no need to plan for 5 or 5000 athletes. they do it anyway.

Comrades marathon charges +- R200. Great goody bag, Excellent water stations.

etc.

They get 15000 plus entries.

Race organizers have seen this is a way of gertting easy cash.

I think this sticks.

Was gonna race tomorrow but now.... me thinks not.

and when everyone adopts a "wait and see" attitude, no one pitches when it rains, even though the orginisers had to incur the fixed cost. Wording also plays a role. If I was orginising events, I'd phrase it a early bird discount, rather than calling the on the day entries late entry fee. either way. we should pay more for the convenience to decide whether we wish to face the weather. Another thing I'd like to see is a system of pre-entries only. This way you can limit the numbers (especially with off road events, imagine expecting 1000 entrants and getting 4000 through the single track) and minimise wastage. It also helps determine how many personnel you need for registration and parking marshalling before the event, you also have accurate numbers to give to your service providers (food stalls, bike shops etc).

Spare a thought for non CT riders doing the Argus they have to go to CT to collect :D

Ita a schlep yes, but at the moment it serves the purpose of spreading out number collection. One way would be to also have number collection on race day and this works for smaller races but could be problematic for the bigger ones as you will need additional staff on the morning to cope. Being involved as a volunteer i can tell you we struggle to get enough volunteers to man intersections, WP, start marshals, back up drivers etc. Races in KZN such as Tour Durban and Amashova have collection days prior to race day. Some races do have local collection other than Jhb(Carnival, RFS, Emperors)

Until we get some sort of electronic self print enterance i dont think there's much option.
