Fellow cyclist, you are riding like a W@NKER

post-1830-0-19606800-1296460562.jpgWith Argus fever hotting up down here, we have the annual cyclists vs cars showdown. Every year on cue.

it's well known that there are idiots behind the wheel and just as many on two wheels. In fact this column sums it up quite nicely. http://www.news24.co...row-up-20110125

Now there I was the other day, pondering this question. I was in the car and had to wait for a roadie on his training mission go through his red before I could follow my green, at a really busy intersection.

I manage to gesture a WTF??? to him, which was greeted with a zap.

pretty standard stuff, we've all seen it before.

But then i figured, what i really wanted to say was:

"listen buddy, I also ride bikes. I also train on the road. I'm not just some motorist with road rage on the boil. What you're doing is not helping us share the road with cars. Infact it's people like you who make non-cyclists want to run us over at the first opportunity. Looking at your fancy italian roadbike I reckon you probably own a car too and know EXACTLY what I'm talking about. So man up and stop being a tjop on the road."

obviously thats a little hard to say in 2 seconds, so I propose a sign to do just that.post-1830-0-19606800-1296460562.jpg

Aloha, bit confusing. He may just think youre giving a friendly gesture.

He may also think youre indicating a"Y" (sigh language)

good proposal, and one that I could have used countless times here in Pretoria too.

e.g. the time to drink (and therefore wobble a metre into the road is NOT when you hear a Diesel Landrover coming from behind... luckily a) it was a small street so I wasn't going fast, and B) I always give maximum clearance to cyclists... Other wise my Bullbar would have made a mess of said cyclist.

We all complain about cars/trucks/taxis behaviour, but very often I see bad, stupid or dangerous behaviour from cyclists.

Great idea, we've all been there sitting in the car..... somewhat sheepishly I have been on both sides but am trying to be less of a wanker

A great truism for all those holier than thou's out there.... "You are either a wanker or a liar" :D

oooh, sign language. I didn't think about those implications, but ja it would need to be a one hand sign..so this is the best i could think of.

Dude, you're confusing your hand signals.

This is the internationally recognised hand signal for 'Howzit my bru'.

The correct sign for wanker is:

  • 2 weeks later...

To the two dudes riding two abreast on Frederick Drive, Northcliff this morning, you really need to evaluate your desire to stay healthy.

This must be one of the narrowest roads with no escape routes and drivers charging along at crazy speeds.

I know you probably will make some defence about your rights etc, but its dangerous and riding single file for a kilometer won't ruin the conversation, and you are more likely to make it to Monday.

Thank you. I use this one on drivers frequently and it gets the message across pretty well.

If I had to give everybody on the cradle route a hand gesture on Saturday, I would have been riding with one hand all the way from Malibongwe to Avianto. Especially the tri-athletes.
