  1. Be blessed brother, your in our prayers, stay focused and stay humble and keep the positive attitude.......
  2. Just had excess of 10k deducted for loss. Note that I had all my insured bikes on the discovery Vault with valuations and proof of purchase.. Online Vault allows you to store important documentation securely, speeding up the claims process. You'll pay no excess for specified portable possessions with the correct documentation stored in the Online Vault. The ................... Insure excess waiver By saving your documents that show proof of ownership, including valuation certificates that show proof of ownership and proof of value, in your Online Vault you'll have your household contents and portable possessions claims settled quicker. We'll also waive your specified portable possessions' basic claim excess if these items' documents are stored on your online vault. Remember to keep your original documents safe. Broker Claimed that bicycles under portable possessions were excluded under this section. I reviewed and perused my policy document and found no exclusion anywhere. I argued this with the broker, indicated to him his error in interpretation of the clause, can confirm that I will now have the excess refunded. I think this clause might change, the way i see it, insurance companies adapt their policy terms and conditions based on claims histories and experiences learnt from claims. I am happy with my current underwriter and will probably remain with them for some time to come, the brokers however seems to be another challenge.
  3. my 1c worth I did my first 2 on supplements and on day 3 felt nauseous, got rid of supplements and felt better...found that .. 1. During any race event you tend to ride harder and you tend to drink more, your body can only store so much sugars, what does it do with all the rest it does not need. I am not saying this is for everyone, just found that at day 3 my body said enough with all these sugars. Only drank coke and other type replenishment at the water points, I.E, got rid of GU and front bottle supplement All the previous advise given by these wonderful fellow riders will help get you to the finish line, but you and you alone will need to put in the training......that you know of course.. this to me is the EPIC: 1. 60% fitness 2. 30% Mental 3. 10% Luck Best of luck with the training and enjoy every moment.... THAT GOES FOR ALL YOU DOING THE 2019 ABSA CAPE EPIC... BOOOOOYAAAAAAA
  4. Agreed .......had my bike and everything else stolen recently off a hijacked courier truck, put in the claim and started replacing the old bike way before insurance paid out. Do I want my old bike back as I know that it will lay in the recovered stores and then sold for almost free. So why not offer them a buy back and at least get my old bike back, but but but, what to do with the old bike...ride it and race the other...pay the additional insurance as I now have to insure both the bikes..... what I can say is....BROKERS are not all bells and whistles.......read your policy, understand the contents and how it should be specified under the portable possessions....got a new broker after the claim as there was about 90k difference in pay out, not because of being under insured, but because of the specifications or lack thereof or wrong underwriting due to broker error. Although not challenged, not because of a weak case, but rather energy related.....new broker looks at policy and immediately informs me that it needed to change, this change however means an additional R 900-00 in premiums and from 2019 it will be R 1500-00 additional. Studied the policy in detail and realised that if you make a calculated risk decision and screwing the insurance company is not YOUR reasons for insurance but rather to be covered in the WHAT IF event you will find yourself being the one feeling screwed. Shortened version, informed new broker to make certain changes to my policy and decided to self insure certain items, so if nothing happens in the next 12 months, which I believe will be the case, I would have saved an amount = to my highest item excluding Bike. There after I will place that premium into long term saving for retirement. DON'T know if it is the right decision but rather that than being uninformed.
  5. SO SO SO very sad, any life lost is sad, but when its close to home its even sadder......RIP Phillip and may the cycling angels guide you in the heavens....Condolences to the family in this very very very pain full time.................

  9. THIS IS WHAT I MAILED THIS MORNING Hi All It is with a sombre heart that I again have to bring the matter of cyclists being attacked at Kayamandi as a topic of discussion. I wish to reiterate my willingness to work towards viable solutions to try and reduce the risk of attacks on cyclists coming too and leaving your town. Some feedback: 23/10/2017 Attacked by 4 men 2 with knives, injured and robbed of Cell Phone. 21/10/2018 Attempted attack by 3 men, one pulled a knife, I was lucky as I was alert and retaliated by spraying them with pepper gas, they retreated and ran away. Note that these are not the only incidents for this year as we have received multiple reports from other cyclists. With the above in mind I wish to draw your attention to meetings held and certain comments that were made with regards to security.. Meeting with Quintin: Hi Quintin Our meeting of Friday 27/10/2017 has reference: Firstly a rundown as to what was discussed… You were of the opinion that the R304 @ specifically Kayamandi has been a problem area for some time and that you were aware of such. You had security in the area and for 18 months there were 0 incidentsYou had tried to use communities members to secure this area after the external contract security had expired but this failed due to intimidationYou have had meetings with the SAPS and other units to discuss the issues in particular the assault and robbery of cyclists at the above areaYou have budgetary constraintsStellenbosch Municipality was busy working on a long term solutionCCTV has been approved but this would be for 2018 budgetThe interim solution would be to put a security person at staggered timesYou welcome any input from cyclistsCyclists are considered a value to Stellenbosch and you do carry our interest at heart and would do all necessary to try and assistYou would be having meetings with Thorburn etc to see where they would be able to assistI would communicate with our cycling groups to see if we could get preferred cycle times as an interim solutionA negative 2018 world cup “UCI member robbery” could have dire consequences to Stellenbosch as a safe cycling haven , as per Mr David Botha Based on the above could you please let me know where we are and what interim solutions have been implemented if any. I await your favourable response Note that to date I have not received any reply to the above mail sent on 31/10/2017 Meeting held with Honorable Mayoress Van Deventer Again certain short term solutions were discussed. It is concerning to me that so little is being done to reduce the risks associated to cyclists, It more and more seems like money is of greater importance that safety. We come to you beautiful town as it is a nice route to cycle from Durbanville, Franschoek, Even as far as Paarl. We support your local businesses where we stop off for coffee, breakfast and other . The question however is, how long should we continue being threatened, robbed of our belongings and even injured until you really make a concerted effort to help us reduce these risks on us personally and our belongings? How long are you going to turn a blind eye and hope that this issue will go away? Are you going to wait until a cyclist is killed by one of these thugs and just becomes another statistic or a cyclists shoots one of these thugs and then becomes the criminal for defending him/herself before you decide to do anything? It is your responsibility to ensure that everything possible is being done to protect you citizens and visitors to your town. If you are not interested in our safety as cyclists, “ which I must say seems to be the case” please inform us of this and we will no longer cycle to your town and contribute to its economy. This has been left for a year now and I am in outdated with queries from fellow cyclist as to what is being done from committee level to address this issue. Please can I ask that this matter is now taken seriously, addressed accordingly and that I am informed of the actions taken by the Stellenbosch Municipality to reduce this threat hanging over us every time we come to your town. I also wish to place on record that we try and reduce the threat on ourselves as much as possible but can only do so much. Should I or any other cyclist again be attacked at this area “Kayamadi” and either be injured or loose any personal belongings as a result of the failure of the Stellenbosch municipality not taking serious action we will be hold the executive committee of the Stellenbosch municipality personally liable for such injuries and or loss and will gather as much cyclists as possible to initiate a class action suit. Please understand that this is not a threat but a plea from me personally to start taking this matter very seriously and not just talk about the issue on hand but actually do something about it. Kind Regards Norman K. Van Rooyen
  10. Also wanted to join them and return the same way....decided to go pedal the afternoon ....
  11. Sorry Sunday around 16h00 coming out of Stellies
  12. another Kayamandi Stellenbosch incident, luckily with a different outcome..... 4 x riders and 3 x attackers.... one pulled knife and approached me ready to attack. Luckily for me i was alert and had my pepper-spray ready... Sprayed his a.. and they retreated.... Could've been a very different outcome. seems as if things are becoming a regular occurrence again in this area....be safe guys
  13. what a meeting.....i am glad i don't have to deal with all the red tape.... that being said, i must say, the mayor seems passionate about cycling and although her hands are really tied in many ways, seems really eager to assist as much as she can possibly assist. one thing became very clear, cycling incidents are not even a drop in the ocean of the things they need to deal with and one can see that although not a number 1 priority the mayor is concerned and have agreed to where possible assist There were short term and long term initiatives discussed.... SHORT TERM see where a protection officer of some sort can be stationed at the kayamandi section of the R304, 3 months during this period other initiatives need to be identified and adressed meet with the SSI to discuss action plans identify safe cycling time past hot spot areas identify the community and address the risks with them and how this negatively affects them long term CCTV initiative Patrolling of identified hot spots Linking various cycling groups and communicating incidents and or identifying hot spots communication with SAPS Note the above are only some of the ideas discussed and as time goes i believe more feasible and long term solution will present itself. I most certainly do not have all the answers but i believe continued interaction with the powers that be will eventually have a positive impact There is no doubt that when all the interested parties join hands success will be achieved and I will continue to be involved until acceptable solution have been found....
