  1. It's that time of the year again. We're taking a look back at the numbers and trends we have seen on Bike Hub in 2017. Click here to view the article
  2. The Ascent 1.0 is a lightweight, high-performance do-it-all road bike from locally based direct-to-consumer brand Cabal. After the recent launch of their road bike and carbon wheelset range, we were keen to test out the offering. The Cape Town-based duo behind Cabal, Jon Colledge and Andrew Bloom, aim to offer high performance, high quality bikes at competitive prices thanks to their direct-to-consumer “white label” approach and OEM relationships with component suppliers like SRAM. 3. The final stage of the 2017 Momentum Health Cape Pioneer Trek presented by Biogen was a loop through the Chandelier Game Reserve outside Oudtshoorn. For the last time, we rustled around in our tents, wriggling into lycra, looking for clean socks, and applying suncream before dragging ourselves and our bikes to the start line. 4. The fifth stage of Cape Pioneer Trek took us from George to Oudtshoorn via Montagu Pass. Click here to view the article
  5. The start of stage two of the Cape Pioneer Trek heads directly into a searing, steep tar climb, from the Milkwood Primary School alongside the sea in Mossel Bay, to the top of the ridge overlooking the bay. Not unexpectedly, this tore the midpack we ride amongst apart. And set the tone for the rest of the day. Click here to view the article
  6. The first stage of Cape Pioneer Trek was preceded by ominously heavy rainfall. Just ten minutes before the start it was bucketing down, and showing no signs of clearing. Miraculously, as we were called to the line, the clouds lifted, leaving us with perfect, cool conditions for the rest of the day. Click here to view the article
  7. Boschendal Farm Estate is giving away two-nights accommodation at TROUT Cottage, tucked on the slopes of the Simonsberg mountains. Click here to view the article
  8. Founded in 1685 Boschendal Farm Estate is one of the oldest farms in South Africa. It is set in the Banhoek Valley surrounded by the Drakenstein and Simonsberg mountains, and lush gardens and vineyards. The original farmstead complex is now a national monument with a rich history of more than 300 years. We spent a couple of days at Boschendal Farm to experience all it has to offer, and ride our bikes on the vast trail network. Click here to view the article
  9. On Sunday 2 April, about 100 technically skilled mountain bikers gathered for the first Dirtopia Enduro at Uitkyk Wine Estate to ride the Simonsberg trails in the Conservancy. Click here to view the article

  12. For decades the sock length debate has infested social media, forums and ride chats. Many have gone back to Rule #27 of the Velominati which states that: “Shorts and socks should be like Goldilocks. Not too long and not too short. No socks is a no-no, as are those ankle-length ones that should only be worn by female tennis players.” Many riders care to dissagree and stick to “just above the ankle” and others prefer to ride it long - mid-calf long. On a recent topic on Bike Hub, members of the community showed their stance on sock length and let’s just say, things got messy... Click here to view the article

  16. This year the Absa Cape Epic finishes for the first time at Val de Vie and its renowned polo fields – the fourth host for the Grand Finale in the race’s 14 editions. After leaving Oak Valley the finish is just 85km away and the riders have the least climbing to do on any day of the 2017 Absa Cape Epic. They will, however, be well advised to keep some energy in spare for the climb up the Franschhoek Pass after about 40km. That seven kilometre haul rises nearly 400m, marking the last major climb of the 2017 Absa Cape Epic. Click here to view the article
  17. When veterans of the Absa Cape Epic were asked about the toughest climb ever in the event, their response was unanimous: Groenlandberg. In 2017 the route returns to the rugged track which rises more than 600m along nine kilometres of rocky, sandy climbing – the average gradient is seven percent but one or two sections tilt up more than 20%. 19. There’s always a fun day at the Absa Cape Epic, and barring bad weather this should be it. First there are a few climbs to negotiate, including a particularly nasty one that has concrete strips for traction and then the legendary Nuweberg from the east side. Click here to view the article
  20. The transition between two of the Western Cape’s most sought-after holiday getaways takes riders on many ups and downs, and a burst of singletrack. It is rolling hills from the moment you leave Greyton and riders will approach one particular climb with apprehension: it’s called Pumping Legs for good reason, and as you approach it seems like the road heads up straight into the sky.
