  1. Also drove past it as they were loading the cyclist onto a stretcher. Glad to hear that he was alive and sending him(?) healing wishes. The light was getting quite low at the time and given the number of people driving in the yellow line on that road it is a very dangerous road to cycle. Pretty: yes, but very dangerous. I also wish at some stage the traffic department would enforce the law on that road - I have only every seen traffic cops sleeping under the trees there, never actually doing anything to help with road safety.
  2. Wow there's quite a lot of jealousy out there. To some people R30k is really not a lot of money so why shouldn't they spend that on a bike. Maybe if he gets serious he will buy something nicer.

Thanks all - I live in Hout Bay so my usual routes take in the Southern Peninsula or sometimes up the West Coast towards Koeberg (including the cycle lane from town to Tableview) and although these are great routes I am looking for a change. The Durbanville area sounds good - I have not done much riding out there except for the Burger and as I am training for my 3rd Ironman something where I can get on the tribars and just go sounds ideal (the route in PE is pretty flat so I want to spend more time training on flatter routes at higher speeds). I had a bit of a close shave coming back through Fish Hoek this weekend where a driver almost ran me off the road so wider roads with good visibility would be ideal.

  7. Hi Anyone know of any good surface, long / flat roads with minimal traffic near Cape Town? The mountain is fun and all, but I would like to be able to ride for a while on a flatter / rolling road. Thanks for any advice! g

    IMSA 2012

    My long(er) term goal is to qualify for Kona although I may need to travel somewhere to do that as there are not many slots in PE. My first IMSA was in 2010 where I did 12h35, then last year I did 11h35 (1h03 swim, 5h20 bike and 5h05 run so clearly there is a lot of room for improvement on the run). My current plan for 2012 is to race IM 70.3 in Jan then push through to the full race in April. I have been working on my run for a while now and will do my first standalone marathon in less than 2 weeks (Cape Town Marathon) so I should get a feel for how I have improved. My goal time for 2012 is 10h30 and then to continue improving to start to challenge for a slot in the coming years. Can't wait for the light to improve so I can load on the hours - I love the training!
  9. I'm still in two minds. Part of me would relish the challenge (excuse the pun!) part of me thinks I am nuts! My wife keeps telling me to go for it though! 8 days until the price goes up, got some thinking to do.... Maybe I should just bite the bullet....

  12. Is anyone here signing up for this. I am seriously considering it but I'm a little concerned about the training through winter - and the ice cold / shark infested water ;-) Although I must admit at 2pm last Sunday I was wondering why I do tri at all and swearing to myself no more. Amazing how quickly I forget :-)
  13. Can't really compare the two based purely on distance. For example a 20km easy run can be much easier than 100km cycle. But if you run the 20km hard and ride the 100km hard then the run would be more difficult (at least it was for me last weekend during my training). I think running gets progressively more difficult as distance increases than cycling (due to the jarring). I can double the distance I cycle and as long as I get the nutrition right I am usually fine. Double the distance running and I will be really struggling.
  14. They're also designed to be more aerodynamic in themselves (which is why the rear wheel is usually tucked in close to the frame). This is because they are designed to be used in non-drafting events.
