Option 2. We need affidavits from residents that have used the access over the pipe track to Constantia Neck for over 30 years. In that way we can prove rights of access and a servitude via prescription which requires the usage was openly done and uninterrupted use. There may be a case to be made for common law public access rights, similiar to the right to traverse Ruyteplaats along the old historic Baines path. The developer had to put gates in and allow the public to continue using the road. We need a lawyer cyclist willing to take this on pro bono (or on risk if it's a strong case) backed I guess by a big petition for what it's worth. The guys who ran the zip lines got closed down by court order, loosing the case with costs...ouch.

Both high-end and very desireable bikes, but I think the patented virtul pivot suspension on the SC (same stuff I have on my Intense Spider 2) adds an edge to be considered. It makes for a unique travel path that enhances climbing, reduces pedal sag and pushes the bike forward as it goes down. As for the comment about "won't see a SC at the Epic", you can safely disregard that little insight IMHO. Sponsorships and brand perceptions have much more to do with it. My 2c

I have one on my car, but must say I doubt the efficacy of this campaign. The drivers who will look, consider and understand don't need this type of awareness. The ones that kill & maim cyclists don't give a *&^%$#@ for most. Like Americans with their guns, South Africans have an attitude problem with their cars. Jumping red robots, overtaking on solid lines, riding on pavements, passing on the shoulder, the list goes on. Until we have effective enforcement of laws (ha ha, not likely given the state of the courts) this will remain a country of bandits and reckless lunatics. I will stick to the mountains on my dikwiel. I have used DCB Logistics twice to get bikes from Cape Town to JHB and to Maritzburg by road. The boxed weight of 18kgs sounds right and I paid about R180 per bike (uninsured) The company is owned by cyclists and do a lot of work during the Argus event. Tel: 0861 322 564

I regularly commute through from Newlands to town, passing by there around 7ish. Only other souls I have ever seen early in the morning are other cyclists and joggers. I personally think Long street is more dangerous in the middle of the day, I have 2 friends that have been mugged at knife point for the cell phones and wallets in the middle of the day.

Brett Rightford, winemaker at Diemersfontein, did the Freedom Challenge in 2010 with a classic brooks saddle on a 29er Giant. You must do 1,000ks of riding them in before they get properly comfortable.Apparently then there is nothing to match that. Heavy of course.

They look quite odd as well, and as we all know, one's bike must look good. That said, those who swear by them will stand on the rooftops singing praise. My Gobi works for me, never had any discomfort, not even on the Freedom Challenge toting 10ks on the back.

No I haven't and all I said was it isn't for me. Punt starts: An interesting alternative is the Epic Trippers event that runs in on the same route at the same time as the Hairy Epic. It's put together by my riding buddy Di Thomas (who's done 4 Epics and the Freedom Challenge twice) - she's part of the team that maps the Epic route every year. Check out http://www.daytrippers.co.za/cape-epic-cycle-tour-2012.php - at R14,5k you get to cycle most of the route, you sleep and eat in a B&B (not a tent on a rugby field), and get to experience the beauty of the trail. Punt ends. You don't get the glory badge though.

Following a cloud of dust with helicopters and quad bikes toting camera men all over the place is not my idea of mountain biking. Someone got hospitalised a year or two ago on after being run over by a maniac on a quad bike. Lots of other multi-day stage events out there offering much better value for money. The Freedom Challenge is where real mountain biking adventures happens IMHO . It's worth training up for that. If that's too big a bite, start with the Ride to Rhodes. Warning: there's no prize or instant glory to be had, just a deep personal sense of achievement. No I don't work for them, but have done both. Life changing experience, I promise you.

As with any online forum these days, it seems to attract a bevy of arm-chair opinionistas and closet fascists. It does prove the age-old axiom of democracy where "people say what they think even if they don't think".
