  1. I want to organise a group buy for nuts in CT:

Nuts make great snacks and treats (you should try making your own marzipan or macadamia nut butter!), but retail prices are a ripper.

Think >R240/kg almonds and then they are also rancid (even from WW!).

So the plan is to go to a wholesaler and get something cheaper and hopefully fresher as it won't have been in transit and on shelves for as long as the retail goods.

Empire Trading have offered to sell to me as long as I order more than R1.5k.

Please let me know if you know of a place that has better quality/prices!

These are some of their prices per kg. I added VAT and the prices didn't strike me as that amazing for wholesale:

    ALMONDS CSSR RAW 131.10

    COCONUT FLAKES 57.00

    Dried CRANBERRIE 64.98

    HAZELNUTS 176.70

    MACADAMIAS RAW 117.42

    PECAN HALVES 159.60

    WALNUTS 174.42

    PUMPKIN SEED 78.66

  2. Anybody looking to make bone broth should try ox neck.

Got 3.5kg at PnP on Friday @ R28/kg. Enough to fill my 7 litre pressure cooker..

There was a surprisingly good amount of meat on the bones.

Added spices and red wine vinegar and let it simmer for most of the day.

Stew was delicious and congealed to a thick jelly in the fridge. If your broth doesn't congeal then consider adding more bones(or longer cooking times) or less water.

You can reuse the bones until they are soft (I made two batches and both congealed).

    Enjoy

  3. PnP had the odd special on Kerrgold last year for about R50/500gr.

The cheapest you'll find Kerrygold is the 250gr packs that PnP was selling for R32.99 less 10% Smart Shopper discount (special is off atm, but PnP usually brings back Kerrygold deals).

I've decided to stick to cheaper butter, as it's sometimes possible to get it at R20/500gr on special at PnP.

Don't forget that Kerrygold could possibly be sending their inferior winter product which isn't strictly grassfed and probably tastes different to SA, in which case you might be paying extra for a placebo effect.

  4. I recently started going to work and back by train (MetroPlus) as Cape Town traffic sucks donkey dong.

Only problem is the 40 minute walk to the station and CBD side I need another 10 minutes to get to work.

Saw a guy with a fold-up bicycle on the train today and got thinking what's my best bet for a pedal ride I can take onto the train? So far thought of:

Unicycle (Crown Cycles have a nice-looking one for <R1k)

    BMX bike (<R1k)

    Fold-up bike (R?k)

The unicycle seems the most convenient and least likely to get stolen (unless I park it too close to the circus!).

BMX bike is small and hopefully cheap enough not to attract thieves.

Fold-up bikes are expensive and probably more likely to get stolen.

  5. Dealt with MSC and only complaint was Jared forgetting to phone me. Other than that everything went ok, thankfully. Their workshop looked neat last I was there. Didn't see a chainsaw or sledgehammer anywhere :P

    Hope you come right.

I see a business opportunity: A CCTV gauntlet for all bikes that go in for a service. Owner pushes it through. No more wrongful liability worries.

With all the flaming some LBSs are receiving I'm sure they'd pay good $$$!

  6. Not sure why Crede would use different companies for different provinces. I received my third container of 25l VCO today from Bigfoot Express, no problems.

Bigfoot are about twice the price from what I gathered over the phone today.

Supposedly Skynet usually delivers without a problem, but screwing up so badly, twice in a row, makes it obvious that there is something very wrong at Skynet Elandsfontein.

  7. Been using a coarse Checkers House Blend grind (yellow packet) for my moka pot the past two weeks.

Very unhappy. Bland (stale?) smell out of the bag even though almost a year before expiry.

Have to pack my coffee really tight into the basket to get something respectable strength-wise (taste is blech either way). Had a few worries about the pot being a ticking time bomb due to the much extended boil time, but everything went fine :D

Time to get fresh beans and a coffee grinder before I ruin my taste buds any more.

  8. The worst is that the package was despatched to me yesterday but not delivered as "no one was home" as seen from waybill tracking. Specifically had multiple people there the whole time. Was also there myself. No hoots or cellphone calls. And then obviously the finishing blow: Damaging the container (again).

That makes Skynet liars on top of being incompetent. bLIKSms :cursing: :cursing: :cursing:

  9. Re previous post.

Salt tabs are even more of a rip-off than etolls. Does anyone have access to a supplier who supplies in bulk (and cheap?)

I made a hectically spicy tripe curry last night with loads of salt. My first meal in a pressure cooker (Thing rocks! Save loads of electricity because all the heat doesn't escape as steam and the one I have is well-insulated)

Putting it into zip loc bags to freeze so I always have a salty snack at hand which I can dilute with more water and bomb in the microwave. Not as convenient as popping a pill, but tastier (and more complete?!)!

Will do more of the cooking for the whole week this year. Stressful new job beginning of Feb far away from home (where ppl shout at me if I leave cream in plain sight in the fridge LMAO) means this'll be possible and probably necessary.

Hope to share some neat time-saving and tasty recipes in the near future.

  10. Hi guys

Had my heart first fat shake today. Tasted quite good, only thing is my stomach has been unsettled for the entire day, is this normal?

Baby steps. It'll take a few days to adjust.

Also, there are some fats that you should really be careful with, eg flax seed oil. That stuff can easily become a laxative so I'm scared to take some before a ride.

  11. How do you know your thyroid function is 100 % ? What did you test for this? What is your body temperature when you wake in the morning ? Your HR when you wake ?

    Don't be so overdramatic :P

Just tell us what ranges you think are cause for further investigation.

Body temperature and HR differ for every person, and also go up or down for a variety of reasons, so how does one use this to make a meaningful diagnosis of thyroid malfunction?

The bulk 25 litre VCO is "Dispatched for delivery" and should arrive before the end of today.

There is one litre left. PM me to reserve.
