  1. Now imagine if you were there - I would have eaten properly, and we would have even TT'd the last 100Km like we did on the 400Km!
  2. Better still, do it in 2015! I have a date with PBP to do it properly next time! I have seldom made such a hash of things, but the experiences keep you sane, and humble.
  3. For the ride report, go to the link bit.ly/r6yUHB
  4. It's here!
  5. Thanks Chris!
  6. Hehe, done, and here's the report! I nearly died, much tougher than army Vasbyt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 Herewith my Chronicle: I finished my 1st Paris-Brest-Paris on Thursday, a 1230Km (728mi) bicycle ride through Brittany from Paris and back, within 90 hours. It was very tough, with a very amateur cycling mistake made at the start that set the scene for a terribly difficult course of events. Herewith the chronicle of an event that required 29,000 Calories to complete - more than 100 energy bars! There are lots of life lessons here which I'll share in due course in my blog. bit.ly/r6yUHB Enjoy!
  7. My take is dumb cyclist for sure! The obvious thing to have done would have been to hang back as I normally do - no idea why last Sunday was different! With some of the high profile cyclist deaths that have happened recently due unfortunately to their own error, I have become a lot more critical of my own mistakes. The aim is to consistently learn and behave better in the interests of staying alive! Stay safe!
  8. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDImIAu-zcM I've been riding a bike on our roads since having to ride to school in primary school. On this day, I happened to have my camera on to try it out in low light conditions, and caught this on film. You decide what happened, besides that I almost got knocked off my bike. Nothing like making sure you keep your wits about you!
  9. Thanks timM!
  10. Here's day 4, in YouTube HQ and smaller commentary font (I'm learning slowly)! This was probably one of the best days of the 550Km trip because the riding wasn't technical, giving you plenty of opportunity to enjoy the magnificent views!
  11. haha, good for her!
  12. Another case of small world! She's tenacious!
  13. Tumbleweed, during the Easter week's holiday - just after the WC. The two girls riding with us were Shelly and Claudia. There was apparently someone else, but she bailed before we got started.
  14. Hey thanks Slowbee! My beginner video skills ought to improve soon! I looked at one today and those subtitles are too big! I will fix that and post HQ versions sometime! Yep, navigation is tricky, especially in the forests where everything grows over so quickly. I think the best thing is to take landmarks as waymarkers, like in the army, instead of relying on the narratives in the overgrown sections, which can be quite innacurate, especially when you're lost ! And of course, there's nothing like simply keeping your wits about you, and making sure you've always got enough water and food! Anyway, I hope I can get to day4 to day6 this weekend! To me day4 was outta this world, sleeping in deep rural Xhosa huts in the village of Vuvu... But wait for the pics! cheers
  15. Aah, the benefits of having started all this last year!
  16. 6th as a roadie? Not too shabby! Cool, let me know the date of the ride - it would be great to join you if it works out! Yep, you're a guaranteed in - I have to wait for Jun 15 to see if I'm even in, after all that work! Then I'll book flights etc!
  17. When did you do it Grant? Apparently it's hard, if not impossible to get in? PS when's your ride?
  18. No GrantC, but perhaps one day! As a roadie, I'm still trying to get my adrenaline down from some of the downhills on day 4 that were probably more suited to a mountain goat! They were quite thrilling though - about 20 minutes of rocky downhill -I think I could become addicted! The hardcore MTBers, meaning everyone else with me, reckoned that those slopes are exactly what they live for! Unfortunately, I was too busy trying to stay tyre-side-down over those rocks to switch on the video at that point
  19. Thanks Cycling Addict. It's even better in the flesh! Once-in-a-lifetime stuff!
  20. This is an arduous task! Day 4 to 6 will have to wait for the weekend!
  21. Day 3
  22. And here's day 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3CM3D5qvDY
  23. Myself and some good mates tackled the 550Km, 6-day Ride to Rhodes last week. Herewith a 6 minute overview of day 1: I will post the following days as I build the videos - sheesh it takes time!
  24. It was a hit and run. The police brought the driver back from somewhere near Delmas, and when asked why he didn't stop, he said it was a high hijack area, and so didn't want to stop. There was nothing about didn't know...
  25. There's definitely an impact on everyone involved LeTurbo, myself included, thanks. There were tears from many that morning. I can also say that he received the best care under the circumstances - there were two nurses in our group, who were joined later by a doctor from a following group. All worked tirelessly to keep him with us. They're quite simply the unsung heroines in all of this, all three of them. They were absolutely amazing and gave everything. I still had to finish the ride after that, being my last qualifying ride for Paris-Brest-Paris. Three chaps joined me. The mood was most certainly sombre.
