The race will start in Potchefstroom this year to pay tribute to its patron, Ertjies Bezuidenhout, who passed away earlier this year. To enter, click here Ertjies studied at North West University’s Potchefstroom Campus where he earned his degree and where he also raced and earned Springbok colours. Besides a new venue and host city, the Bestmed Campus2Campus Super Classic will also present two race distances of 95km and 35km and riders who complete the event will receive a special commemorative Ertjies Bezuidenhout finishers’ medal. All pre-entrants will receive a Bestmed drawstring bag and complimentary Bestmed water bottle. The event will start at the Old Rag Farm in Meyer Street, opposite the Medi Clinic. The Old Rag Farm is on the corner of Meyer Street and the R53 that goes out to Ventersdorp. The event starts in Meyer street and does a right turn to go out towards Ventersdorp before making a U-Turn and coming back on the same route. The road to Ventersdorp is wide and presents a lovely smooth surface all the way. Licensed riders, and open/seeded fun riders who feel up to the challenge, will cover 95km while a more manageable distance of 35km will also be on offer. The 95km event is the perfect training ride for riders taking aim at the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge. The route for the event consists of lots of flats and mild, rolling undulations and riders will get home a little quicker than with past editions of the event. The Bestmed Campus2Campus will remember a great rider and allround nice guy. Ertjies Bezuidenhout, who won the King of the Mountains title in the Raport Tour a magical seven times, suffered a stroke at the age of 56 after completing the Carnival City Macsteel Classic in February. After the turn-around point, the final 47km are quick and the predominant winds predict a tailwind all the way to the finish. The road surface throughout is very good. Now in its seventh year of staging, the Campus2Campus traditionally started and finished at the NWU Campus in Vanderbijlpark. The organisers felt it was fitting this year to change and showcase the Potchefstroom Campus, alma mater of Ertjies Bezuidenhout. The 95km will challenge the best of South Africa’s professionals and a worthy winner will emerge in North West’s National Classic. The final 2km of the ride in town will present a hassle free run into the finish with only a left turn. This point, as well as the finish will be safely marshalled by Tlokwe Metro Police. Waterpoints There will be four waterpoints on the route. Venue The Old Rag Farm at Potchefstroom University is the perfect venue to host the expected 1 600 riders with ample parking. Lots of eats and drinks will also be on sale on the day. Directions to the start From the N12 from Johannesburg, turn right into Louis le Grange Street and right into Meyer Street. The Rag Farm is a couple hundred metres on on the left hand side. Bestmed Campus2Campus Ftech Cycling Shirt on sale for R399 when you enter on-line. Click here to view an image of the shirt. Entries are open on www.asgevents.co.za The event presents an amazing off-road experience and showcases the bestmountain biking terrain the West Rand has to offer. With the impressive Silverstar Casino as host venue, the event is a hasslefree, enjoyable experience. Although nestled in urban surrounds, the route is one of the mostpicturesque that you’ll find anywhere in South Africa. Although you’re very close to the city, you can truly feel part of natureand be spoiled with unsurpassed views and great riding terrain. Date: 8 September2012 Starting time: 8:00 Entries: www.asgevents.co.za On-line entriesclose: 4 September 2012 To view theofficial Silverstar MTB Challenge Cycling Shirt, available when you enteron-line at R399, click here . 40km route The ride has become known as a tough, true test with a route filled withvaried challenges, but it's all rideable and not too demanding technically. There will be no tar road crossings and the event will traverse the propertythat is owned by the Laurentia Trust on the Northern side of the R28 as well asthe old ox wagon trails which present brilliant views on a wonderfully sculptedsingle track descent. As with past editions, the event this year again starts off with thetraditional 2.5km tar climb up Hillsnacks which spreads the field and thenheads onto the mountain onto Mogale Parks ground. The 13km on the left southern side of the Hillsnacks mountain are generallyregarded as the most technical of the race and once you’re through this bit theride becomes progressively faster. It’s great to have the use of this entire protected area on top of theHillsnacks mountain and a big thanks goes to Mogale Parks for assisting. After ducking underneath the R28 and up a steep tarred climb, the eventdrops down the valley on a 2km fast single track descent and then hits thefirst river crossing. This section is the start of the popular King’s KloofMountain Bike Trail. The course only uses the manageable bits inside KingsKloof. Then it’s a gentle climb up to the back of the Krugersdorp Grave Yard andthen the route winds its way down the mountain via some of the old historicalox wagon trails which the early settlers used to get to Krugersdorp. This isthe most exhilarating bit of the route, which is brush cut and cleared toperfection to provide the coolest quick downhill with spectacular views. When you hit Hendrik Potgieter it’s a sharp right and directly into thefamous Laurentia Flower Farm where the second waterpoint presents itself amongsome real floral splendor. 5km of flat riding awaits at Laurentia among orchards and their vastnursery. Exiting the farm, you ride through yet another nursery and enter intothe Honingklip plots via a 1km single track servitude past the spaza shop. Then it’s onto a few hundred metres of provincial road, which includes a 500metre climb, before riders hit single track and jeep track which takes them allthe way back to Silverstar. A quick duck underneath the R28 via another culvertbrings you out right at Silverstar. The route really has the perfect mix and is ride-able throughout. It has alot of variation and strong uphill challenges with vast downhill rewards. Forseasoned campaigners it’s a fast ride. While the route starts off tough and technical there is a lot of rewardlater on with lots of variety, strong challenges as well as long sections offast jeep and single track. The total ascent on the 40km event is 700 metres. 20km route The 20km route is a lot less technical with very little climbing involved. It stays at the bottom of the Hillsnacks Mountain through the Heuningklip Plotsbefore turning at Laurentia farm where it joins up with the 40km ride.
