ROUTE DESCRIPTION: 25km Distance The 25km distance race has a bit of something to offer for everyone. The route profile includes about 400m of climbing, making it a tough cookie but enjoyable for all. There are spectacular views along the route and no less than 4 long single track forest sections that will take your breath away. The route consists of a variety of terrain with great descents, some challenging climbs and fast winding single track. It has jeep track, farm roads, single track and it winds through a number of sugar cane farms, along streams and through open fields. This race has a bit of everything. 50km Distance The 50km distance is a SINGLE LOOP. It's a challenge you will relish if you have a bit of fitness under your belt - or a lot of time. With about 900 odd meters of climbing, this undulating route will take you through, up and over some of the most amazing trails in KZN. After we took the decision to move the event to Ballito the concern was always wether we could match the beauty of previous years. We think we have not only done this but quite possibly exceeded it. Riders will follow most of the 25km route, and split off at about 15km into the hills. Most of the 50km route consists of new track with yet another couple of single track sections and some hair-raising sections along the contours of the mountains, with not much room for error. The route is worth every drop of sweat, and experiencing 50km/h+ descents and hilltop views that will make you feel like you are on top of the world make it all worth the effort. MORE INFORMATION: Formerly known as the KZN Expedition, this annual race has become a highlight on the KZN MTB Calendar. For the last five years it took place in the Valley of 1000 Hills and although it's been a huge success, the difficulty of having a separate start and finish venue, 60km apart, was something we as race organisers decided to look at. For the last 6 months our team has searched the coast for a venue that would not only meet the high expectations of this event but hopefully take it up a notch or two. Enter the Sugar Rush Adventure Centre in Ballito. Sugar Rush is a new venue situated within the spectacular hills of Ballito and surrounds. The land boasts some of the most amazing views and terrain, all adding up to a mountain-biker's dream. This spectacular multi-sport venue will be opening its doors to the public on 9 November 2013, with theBallito Expedition as the opening event to showcase some of their new trails. With both a 25km and 50km distance on offer, these trails are not only new and never-ridden, but they have been meticulously designed and created to offer each competitor a day they will not forget. Sugar Rush have created over 100km of MTB and trail running routes that will be open to the public from November. We have, together with Russell and Tyronne White from the Sugar Rush team, put together two distances that will not only showcase some of these trails but also offer something unique and exclusive for this race. The event will start and finish at the Sugar Rush Club House, located less than 10 minutes outside of Ballito and 20 minutes from Durban CBD. This venue has more than enough parking, a stunning coffee shop and winery and wide open grass areas to enjoy a great day out with the family. The Expedition has always been known as a tough yet rewarding race, this year is no different. As a whole this event has always been about great routes and something for the family. The teams from ASG and Sugar Rush hope that we will give all the riders and supporters something to remember. There will be a number of great waterpoints and spectator viewing points along the route, so check out the Bestmed Ballito Expedition Facebook page for all the details. 8. Dear Knorpantoffel, I would like to investigate this for you - sounds very strange that you would have 'won' a 20% discount voucher. Sometimes these are included in our goodie bags (for some events where we have dealers supporting them) but it is not a 'prize' for winning a category (I would think). Which category did you win or podium in to 'win' this voucher - I can just check if there was a mixup of some kind. Rgds ag

The long ride covers 104km while a 40km option is also on offer. Both distances are on flat routes and will provide a good moral booster before the Cycle Challenge. The roads are quiet and the road surface good. Sondela has been a popular bushveld getaway for many years and the resort excels in hosting mass participation cycling events, evidenced by the big Sondela Mountain Bike Challenge, which attracted 1500 riders in winter this year. Management are now putting it all in place for a wonderful family weekend on 26 October at Sondela with lots of kids entertainment, a massive beer garden and all sorts of delicious eats and drinks. A controlled bike park is available for riders. Participants will receive wrist tags at registration which will ensure safe keeping of bikes while riders enjoy the festivities over the weekend. The event starts at the entrance to Sondela, which is off the main off-ramp into Bela Bela, and ample parking is cordoned off from the Sondela entrance back towards the N1 Highway. Ample parking ushers will be on duty to help riders get parked and ready and they will look after vehicles during the course of the day. Route description: While the 40km route remains as is from last year – it goes out from Sondela and does a loop around Settlers - the organisation has had to make changes to the 104km route due to road works. The long route will go out past Settlers on the Marble Hall Road, taking a left towards the R33 Road before turning back to Sondela. There is one waterpoint on the short ride at the R516 joining and the long ride boasts four waterpoints. As with all ASG Events, event medical specialists Helivac are on hand to look after cyclists medical requirements and emergencies that might arise. The local Think Bike guys will be on hand to ensure safe passage for cyclists and the local metro police have a big presence on race day to assist.
