The one guy (in blue toyota kit) crashed off the inside toward the end of that wooden 'bridge' we rode along. He was shouting "AMBULANCE, i need an ambulance...!!!" and clutching his forearm. I thought "shees aren't you over exaggerating a bit...?". Then he turned and faced my direction and i saw what his pain was about. Both his radius and ulna bones had snapped clean off at the wrist and were sticking completely out of his flesh, in the area where one would take their pulse, with his hand bent completely back, as if it could have just fallen off had it not been for muscle, skin, tendons and ligaments holding it on.
It actually totally rattled me. Most disturbing thing i've seen since I've been riding bikes. I'm not squeemish but i felt sick. I got closer to that green scaffold bridge and started questioning if i should just unclip and walk over it, then straight to my van n go home n take up chess rather.
I hope he heals up quickly and has proper use of his hand ASAP.
That was my cycling partner although I was in front of him and only found out after the race about his fall. He shattered the bones in his wrist and apparently it took the medics over half an hour to get the right attention to him!!! EPIC FAIL from the organisers!!!!
Fortunately enough he went into surgery and the docs were able to save his hand. He is now in good spirits and extremely grateful that he still has his hand as the surgeons said he was close to losing it, given the damage.
Time to boast about my latest purchase - entry into SANI2C!!!!
Finally some justice for Merzanne van Wyk! Read it on: http://www.beeld.com...omself-20120708
Condolences to you and your family. This article is bitter justice and proves that KARMA does exist.
That SUCKS! If you rode this year, you have the first option to ride next year. If you did not get in this year, only open spots go to those on waiting list and after that is full then to public so if you are like me then NO CHANCE!!!
I rode a 3:20 on a roadbike. Caught some guy on a 29er as I was entering Sea Point - he started in E with me and it took me 107km to catch him. As I passed him, I commented on the respect I had for his ability and his only response was "Dude, when does the single track start. Tired of waiting for it to come round"
Hope they don't change - managed to move up from 8th after day 1 (saturday) to 3rd overall after day 2 in the 30-39 category. Chuffed given that it was my first real mountain bike race.
Agreed. Well done to the Leverage CorporationWell organised. Great route. Great event overall.
Will do it again next year.
Did the 2 day. First proper MTB race. Saturday was HARD!!! Today was awesome.
I am doing it for the first time. I am only expecting what I see on the website.
Anybody know if the Cyclelab rider from BL is OK. He went down very hard on the sweeping downhill past Carnivores restaurant. This was about the 98km.
Come ride in Johannesburg with Cyclelab. We rode 2 abreast for the whole route and stopped at every red light. New attitude in the club is that SAFETY COMES FIRST!
Dont agree. Take away the mud and you are left with a flat course and nothing else. At least the mud gives it a bit of something. Still wont be doing it as last year they offered 40km and the whole route (both laps) was only about 35km and the bottleneck to get into the woods was horridThey should have this race late in the year when there is not so much rain then it will be much better with less mud.
Holy crap! To do 2:39 out of HH means she rode on her own and did not get help from anybody!!
???? Results are out on the Spectrum Sport website. They have me as DNF?????
Suffered with asthma all my life. Riding and being fit has helped significantly but I caution against self-medicating because something works for somebody else. You must see a pulmonologist who will manage your condition.
It is by no means a debilitating disease if managed.
I am on Alvesco and Serevent twice a day and Singulair once a day. I use Ventolin before I ride when I remember to take it. Always carry it with me on the ride in case but I dont think that I have had to use the Ventolin whilst riding in over 2 years.
I think I came across you guys yesteday near the Scout Hall! A freight train! Bit of a coincidence but I hope to replace the slats today or tomorrow time permitting.
Not sure. There were 2 of us motoring through to get back onto the main road before the sun disappeared (1 Spez hardtail and 1 Yeti soft). Thanks for fixing those slats. My heart went through the roof of mouth when I got to the bridge because I saw the slats were out at the last second and had to jump it.
We rode yesterday from PnP headed north to the burnt out bridge, then back up Republic and across towards Fratelli (but ran out of time) before heading back to PnP.
BIG WARNING - just north of the scout hall, the bridge is missing slats!
Why start at Fratellis? If you start at the Pick 'n Pay cornerWilliam Nicol and Republic, you can squeeze in an extra 6-8km and 2 bitching climbs (one up Republic to the power station and then on the way back the climb up to Republic again)
So price will head south by R12,000 per hour which means it hits my price range at .....about 2:30pm
I approached them to see if we could take it up. Their reply was that they are coming into SA themselves
I was in one of the road bunches on the cradle road on saturday and have to agree with Divernick - the bunch was all over the show and rode like a bunch of morons. The way back was much better but when we entered the cradle it was embarrassing how everybody was spread all over the place. You win some, you lose some.
I have ridden that road OFTEN and 95% of the time the bunch is very disciplined and keeps 2 abreast. The other 5% of the time, not so good. Saturday was a "not so good" day.
I cannot fathom the flaming going on in a thread that should be full of sadness and regret for a fallen cyclist. WE GET IT! SOME MOTORISTS DRIVE BADLY. SOME CYCLISTS RIDE BADLY. NOW MOVE ON!
The reality appears to be that a cyclist was killed whilst out enjoying our beloved sport. RIP fellow cyclist. Our thoughts and prayers to your family, friends and all who knew you.
108 km / 3 hours = 36 km/h
