  1. Price on the box is labelled as R500, they had to order when I was there on Tuesday. Seems like they negotiate everything beyond logic.
  2. I bought the yellow continental yesterday from Cajees in Bedfordview / Kensington for R350. They actually quoted R330 but insited it was R350 when I went to collect. The issue is that at Sportsmans Warehouse, the cheapest slick mtb tyre goes for something like R99. I am not sure if the yellow one will last 3 times longer
  3. Some internal pictures.
  4. Ok, so on a more serious note - how do I get rid of the squeeking sound that is coming from the seat (and post) on an alu mtb. I have oiled the clamp so far where it sits on the frame with some improvement. The noise is there even if I just give a decent pedal nevermind bumps and uneven road surface. Any advice???
  5. Herewith a picture of me and my boys before the 94.7 last year. I am very proud of them. We battle to get a distance that keeps everybody happy as the youngest is 6 and the oldest 10. And yes, their mother is taking the picture and also did the ride.
  6. It is very sad to hear. I did not think it noteworthy but seeing this, here goes. On my way to work this morning I passed a cyclist, on the R21 south highway, in full kit ...... at 5h45..... going past OR Tambo airport. This was a real cyclist, the type with no brain. For those that are not yet up at that time, it is still pitch black night at that time.

    Couriers?

I had the same issue with DHL 2 weeks ago, had to ship a frame to Durban for repairs and got a quote of R5,200 - I believed there was a major misunderstanding and went into their offices in Isando and got it shipped for R875, being the price for 13kg of stuff. The surprise came when I phoned and said that the repairs in Durban was done, please bring back my frame, and got the R5,200 price again with a professional but firm attitude of "Pay if you want your frame". I had to go to their office, find the same lady, explain, plead etc and ended up settling for the return shipping of R871. It has to do with a volumetric deemed weight (calculated) being used for pricing. BTW, it was not a bike frame but a boat ski frame, fitted by now, ready for Easter weekend.
  8. I was in the same boat a year ago and eventually settled for the Giant Alias (disk brakes). The '08 has a changed frame and components. What I paid and what I got is a pleasure, it works well. I share your likes in the Scott range and it will definetly be my next bike if I upgrade. At this stage, my wife is in line for a bike - the plan is to get her............, yes youre right, a second hand, good as new Giant Alias. The Scott is coming this way!
  9. Yes, they are hydraulic. I have discussed bleeding with the LBS and they doubt it seeing the age of the bike. They still offer to adjust it for me free of charge but seeing that it doesnt last, I need a better solution.
  10. Hi, I have a Giant Alias 2007, still standard, with Haze Sole disk brakes. I need advice on how to set them up since they go soft and then the LBS adjusts them (without charge) but soon afterwards they are soft again. I have removed the pads and they seem fine with a lot of pad still left. I am able to alter the inner adjustment screw but the outer adjuster seems either stuck or not designed to be adjusted. The problem is only on the rear brake and bike has done in the region of 500 to 800km since new. Any advice ??
  11. I might be in the same boat, same age, re starting cycling again after a bit of road cycling late 80's and early 90's. I started 6 months ago on a MTB and bought the Giant Alias and can say I am very happy, price vs what you get, quality and most important being the make the LBS closest to home sells. Why would I go further?
  12. Sorry to hear! I have been there as well, had my Bull terrier from a very respectable bloodline stolen when she was 3 months old. I practically turned the neighbouthood around, got a lot of leads, found the guys in a township outside Pretoria, had them arrested and even with a witness could not get a conviction and never saw my dog again. This was in 2003 and I have only now been able to replace her, good luck with finding your pet.
  13. If your Landy can take a rooftop-tent for excursions into Africa, it can surely take same rack for a trailer on top of the vehicle. Most probably you would not be able to buy it off-shelf, like my quad bike rack, but it works. A hint of advice, rather have someone build it for you as it takes a few weekends to get to perfection.
  14. I have 3 kids and a wife. I have custom built my own rack to fit on top of a Venter trailer. The rack was made and still used for a quad bike and later adapted to take bicycles. We are able to get between 4 to 6 MTBs onto the rack. The cost of the rack was less than R100 (steel, bolts and paint), doing my own welding etc. The quick release gadgets are the problem since they are in excess of R200 a shot. PM me if you need pictures or advice
  15. Hi, I am from a track athletics background, the basics is the same. Stretch all muscles, concentrate on those relevant to the sport e.g. your legs and lower back in this regard. Try and be warm before you stretch, thus a short run before you stretch and a decent stretch once a training is completed. Never "yank" the muscles being stretched, allways controlled. Stretch to where it starts to feel uncomfortable, hold for 5 to 10 seconds and try to go further for a short while. This will lengthen the muscle but not tear. Everybody will have their own techniques, standing against a wall stretching the calves, standing upright with legs together and bend over touching the ground keeping legs straight, the common hurdle position sitting on the ground on leg straight forward and the other bent fully at the knee with the angle between legs 90 degrees, lean forward stretching on the straight leg and then alternate with the other leg. Standing upright, legs apart leaning sideways, bending the knee on the side whereto you are leaning. For backside there are only a few techniques, lying flat on the floor, raise your legs completely to the point where your toes touch the floor on the other side of your head, bit of a dificult one. There are numerous techniques, physios usually think up new ones, based on the specific injury. You will find stretching will reduce injuries, improve speed and definitely the ability to work. Paul
  16. Hi, I am planning to buy a mountain bike for recreational use. I get different views on the size that is required, allthough everybody has a flavour of "whatever feels right for you". Is there any scientific way of determining the size that will fit??
