  1. I have an XX 39/26 setup on my Air 9 HT and an XTR 40/28 on my Jet 9 Alu Full Sus. Both have an 11-36 cluster. No need for ratio graphs here. I want to know whether I should be feeling a big difference in leg power applied or whether my legs are just poked at the moment? I am talking climbing gears. At yesterday's Oude Molen my legs were toast after 60km of riding the XTR rig. Perhaps I should move the XTR to the lighter bike?
  2. I'm going out at around 4:45pm to give my Jet 9 a run again. Anybody keen drop me an sms on 083 6319796
  3. There is plenty of interest from what we can gauge. But, we are trying to mobilise as many people so that nobody can whinge later that they didn't know about it and felt excluded.
  4. Bryton Cardio 30 GPS watch for R 1800, includes a heart rate monitor. Probably a better running/paddling option. It's old stock, but still looks like a good deal
  5. Did I mention that there will be free Johnny Walker Gold Label and Cuban Cigars, Sushi served off the naked bodies of nubile maidens, Mercedes Benz and Aston Martin lucky draws, various BBBEE tender "opportunities" and free First Class Air Tickets to Iran and China on every seat.
  6. Deal! Wanted everyone to read it first, irrespective of location.
  7. BUMPITY, BUMP, BUMP, BUMP!
  8. Hi Noshow For a number of reasons it is better to ride in a group if you can, but on the other hand, it's not always possible to do so. I say this as a general comment. Table Mountain has been incident free for a long time now and that is thanks to a number of reasons: 1.Increased vigilance and patrols by TMNP 2. Weather 3.Cyclical nature of crime 4.Increased usage of the mountain by all user groups 5.Luck. We can debate the points at length, but I think the most important one is that people have not been scared off the mountain. In fact, the opposite has happened. I have not seen as many riders, runners and walkers on the mountain as over the last 6 months or so. The mountain is being well used and is busy and that is the best way to keep the criminal element away. They never know when the next person or group is coming around the corner, so their situation becomes unpredictable. Criminals love predictability, because inherently , they are cowards. As the days get longer and the weather warms up, the risk of crime will increase. Our scumbag friends are fairweather criminals. I will push for increased visible patrolling from TMNP as we get into Spring and Summer, focussing only on the riding and walking trails . The roads are SAPS's baby, they have 2 vehicles patrolling Tafelberg and Signal Hill Rd all day (till 10pm), 7 days a week. I am not aware of any crime perpetrated against a cyclist, runner or hiker on the tar roads (I refer to Tafelberg and Signal Hill Rd) ,so we focus on what happens below the Rd. To get to your original question. Yes, you can ride on your own on Table Mountain. I do so on most days and guys like Meezo do it as well. I can't offer a guarantee that nothing will happen (who can?), but the increased presence of recreational users has populated the mountain to such an extent that criminals are finding it hard to get a gap. In my experience, and this is borne out by the reported incidents, the main area of concern is the area around the copse of trees where the Plum Rudding Hill trail meets the main trail. Draw a radius of about 400m around that spot and you have the space where most attacks happened. I approach this area with caution every time I ride through it. Looking up at the mountain from town, you can draw a line straight down from the very end of Tafelberg Road ( the turning circle) and say that the area to the right is without a doubt safe. There are people walking their small dogs, ladies walking in two's etc at 7pm when I ride home and they are unconcerned and rightly so. It's safe up on that side, just be careful when you get to the area I have pointed out. There is a secret trail which bypasses this hotspot, but as a good mountain biker, I can't tell you where it is. If the situation were to get out of hand and TMNP do nothing about it, I will spray a Defoliant to make the trail visible for all to use. i hope this helps. If you need more info, email me at ride@tablemountainbikers.co.za AND COME TO THE "TABLE MOUNTAIN MTB FORUM" MEETING AT CRYSALIS ACADEMY NEXT WEEK TUESDAY, 6PM.
  9. Ask your LBS whether you can loan it. I needed a tool for a Lefty Hub , took the bike to the shop and did my thing in the car park. 5 minutes and they had their tool back. Got the new XTR crank
  10. Just organised a Ryder 50 for R3000 ,including Heart Rate belt and Cadence sensor, for a fellow Table Mountain Biker. Not a bad deal. Bryton starts up faster and holds the GPS signal better than the Garmin. I have an Edge 500 and tested the Ryder 40 for a week to compare.
  11. Thursday ride will be moved forward to today due to the rest of the week looking pretty shite as far as the weather is concerned.
  12. The "free shipping" amount has been reduced. My last order was for R 2400 and was free.
  13. Buy away. I think there aren't many on this Forum who haven't bought from Chain Reaction Cycles. I got a box of parts last week. Be aware of 15% Duty on a complete bike, plus 14% Vat on the purchase price on top of that. And a R30 handling fee levied on all orders by the Post Office. So do your sums before you hit the "Order" button. 0% Duty on bike parts, just the 14% Vat and the R30. Have a chat with your Local Bike Shop (he might not know the acronym) and see what they can do for you. never hurts to ask.
  14. Colour copy a couple of R 100 notes and then bundle them up over plain paper, like you see in the movies. Or tackle the guy with some mates and cable tie him to a lamppost.
  15. Hi Smerds I head towards Upper Orange then left above Homestead Park (is it Belmont?) and right up towards the Bengis Field. I use the single track to get to Deer Park and then head towards the Blockhouse and back via Tafelberg Road. Just past Plattekloof I turn right at the boom and along the Jeep Tracks up to the first hairpin turn on Tafelberg Road. Up Signal Hill Rd and then turn left at the ........... and to the first parking area. From there down the Jeep track towards the Bo Kaap and out at Poyser Rd. Back home through Tamboerskloof. I hope that makes sense? We could meet at the top reservoir, cnr Molteno or at Carluccis.
  16. Thursday is looking good .Being a public holiday will there be any takers?
  17. I was doing a night ride on Thursday's but attendance was slack ,so if nobody pitched It was me and my light. Wasn't that desperate to ride at night ,so I moved it to a daytime ride. If there is enough interest , we can do a night ride once a month too. That gives everyone enough time to get from work and as it gets lighter, the night ride becomes a day ride anyway.
  18. I am flexible. I live where the ride starts, so if there are enough takers for a 5:30pm start, then we go. Happy to go next week.
  19. I checked, must have just shaved the F when i wanted to hit the P
  20. San Parks should be there. We will invite Gavin Bell to attend.
  21. Please make an effort to come to this meeting. This Forum will represent Thousands of mountain bikers and take your concerns to San Parks. San Parks specified that they want to deal with ONE entity only, so here we are.

  23. Never had any takers, everybody is on their own buzz on the weekend. I do go out and ride on weekends, just never know exactly when. If you're flexible with time, we can meet up at short notice. Depends on the weather and what the family are up to. I mostly find time in the afternoons.
  24. If you're still up for a ride, come along next week. Happy to take it slow and slot into your pace.
