  1. KEEEEEREKT decision. I have a Niner Air Nine Carbon and just got the (1st in SA) Silverback Mercuty Elite 29er FS) CHALK & CHEESE. For smooth trails the HT is OK but MAN, is that FS comfortable. Just sold my Merida 96 3000D 26" full susser as the 29er is so much better. But, this is very much a personal choice. I am 56, 105kg and don't bounce well anymore. I am also selling my 26" HT.
  2. Seeing as everyone was so gung-ho earlier and kakking on everyone else (in jest some claim), can I have my turn at PMS - "You blerry foooooool - bunny hop is two words, unless hifen _ _ _,hyphen _ _ _, hyfen _ _ _ uh, with a streepie in between
  3. I tend to agree on this - looks like "open land". If you go off-road you accept the associated risk that go with the territory (is that a pun ?). Looks like a rain induced gat. I don't think you are going to come out smilimg here. Still hope you heal well & soon.
  4. My my - some bad attitude this morning. Must be a BBM (Big Blue Monday). I don't think the hub needs the aggro. We are all different BUT we are also all cyclists. The guy asked a legit question - wanted advice. And some fellow cyclists tear him down unneccesarily. And some of us still rip into those adding their thoughts. Ugly, people - ugly. Not needed at all. Hope the day gets better for those cranky people (what happened to civility and good manners ?)
  5. Hey Bud - sorry to hear about your prang - at least you live to tell the tale. Coulda easily broken your neck / back and been paralysed or even died. Get better soon. As to claiming, that is going to be interesting. Many factors will come into play and I'd suggest proper legal advice. Common sense asks 1) were you riding on a pavement ? 2) how did the trench come about (manmade ? civils work ?) 3) if manmade, who made it ?, for what reason ? and most importantly 4) why was it not demarcated / barricaded off ? You got some fun coming your way I fear. Best of luck. PS Get some pics ASAP. If someone suddenly comes along and barricades it or fills it, they (whoever) are admitting it is a problem. My daughter broke a wheel in a pothole in Jhb. Took pics immediately. That afternoon the pothole was nowhere to be seen. More pics and the Municipality had to pay her out.
  6. Just a voice in my head Buddy - now SOD OFF while I go clean my guns - THEY are talking to me
  7. Hey, I know enough to quit when I am ahead - used up all my luck for this year I reckon. Think my guardian angel had anything to do with it ? I have to tell you, after the "voice" spoke, and the thing WAS lying there, I went cold and got goose bumps. That was a scary moment - you kinda start looking over your shoulder and behind the trees.
  8. I am spooked. Lost my MTB computer on a Pvte trail laaaast Sunday. Left a message on the register, asking people to keep an eye open for it. No luck. Owner & wife rode a couple of times too - nix. I wrote it off. This past Sunday I went out with my wife (I was using another bike). It is a 20km trail. I was dawdling behind the Vrou, about 2km from the end, totally not thinking about the computer, when a little voice said to me "look to your left, your computer is there". Not "look around" or "look right" - "LOOK TO YOUR LEFT !!!". And,so help me, there it was, lying 15" off the single track, in the grass. WHAT ARE THE CHANCES ??? - on a 20km trail. I am lost for words.
  9. Hey, if I wasn't in another city, I would swear you met my wife Well, I guess any married oke will tell you his wife just does not listen Something to do with the wedding ring closing the ears
  10. I am directly involved with the technical support on the Cycling South Africa membership system, and would like to answer some of these queries. 3.ronniebuis - It looks like your problem relates to the previous system, i.e. a 2010 license. My suggestion is the same as that above. To register for a 2011 membership, go to CSA membership registration. Hope this helps. Nothing helps me at this point: FACT - CSA took my money but failed to deliver as promised (FRAUD !!!!) CSA WON'T do that to me twice. The only way CSA can redeem themselves in my book is to use my fee from last year and do the honourable thing and use those fees for a 2011 licence for me. If not - bye bye CSA. You need us cyclists more than we need you. Somewhere, sometime, someone is going to get cheesed off enough to start a parallel body. And, by the number of gripes I continually see in all the various media, a huge portion of the current (reluctant) CSA members would gladly swing over allegiance.
  11. Thks for your concern but I am only caught once - I am old and too trustworthy but I am not yet a senile old fool, easily parted from his money. As I said earlier, in my humble opinion, CSA are a bunch of fraudsters. They have lost another potential money cow.
  12. I can't recall what I paid but I scratched and found the original communication from Tarryn Duncan of CSA and I quote "Dear Ronnie, Some good news. Your 2010 cycling licence has been confirmed and is queued for printing ! from here it will take 7 - 10 days for your card to reach your club." unquote. As I said, then the circus. Numerous e-mails resulted in less than zero interest. Through Fat Tracks (even they couldn't come right with CSA) I discovered that the documents were sent to a Louis somone-or-other who was head of EP Cycling. He admitted having received (and subsequently lost) my docs. He was to have rectified the matter with CSA - guess what ? Bogroll. And I believe this guy has been awarded a senior position with CSA ? Man, if they were a disaster before, God help cycling in SA now.
  13. In my humble opinion CSA are a bunch of fraudsters. I paid early / mid-year last year. Got an acknowledgement and was given a temporary letter to carry - pending arrival of my official paperwork. To date, after MANY frustrating e-mails to various people, I still have nothing. I WON'T support these sheisters again. If I want to partake in a race, I will simply wait 50m down the road and join in. I don't need them to tell me I took forever to finish - my computer can do that. Thanks CSA - you suck.
  14. I always carry a piece of tyre liner in my bags - on ALL my bikes. Brilliant patch material - and, you don't have to worry about getting your R20 note back
  15. A caravan is classified as a vehicle in it's own right - you are paying a licence fee for it. A bicycle is classified as a "load" being carried on / by a vehicle. Just another way to milk the easy target. Even with the wheels removed my tandem is marginally wider than my car - I am not prepared to take the risk of sponsoring some useless lazy over-officious Cuntstable for his next donut. See our cops in PE (or, rather, don't see them during the day). BUT, as soon as there is some after hours activity, cricket at St Georges Park, they all swarm out of their hidey-holes. Why ? - OVERTIME ou boet, OVERTIME !!!!!
  16. Fact - obscure your plate - you are in K_K !!. But, you are also required to illuminate your plate so, hanging one on a bike (at night anyway) will not suffice. Some overzealous Cuntstable Plod may exercise this law during daylight anyway - depends on whether he needs his bonus. My Thule has a dedicated illuminated spot for the plate so, as it was made before XXXX date, it must comply. You may also not protrude beyond the width of your vehicle - I have a problem with my tandem. Isn't cycling a fun challenge ??
  17. Bollocks - they cocked my order up totally . I ordered a XT groupset late on a Friday afternoon. Monday afternoon at 13:30 the parcel arrived at my door - unbelievable. I only opened just before 17:00 and found both derailleurs absent. I phoned them immediately, quite irate. By 12:00 the next day, another parcel arrives - only the front derailleur. Another really irate call - I am instructed to "bedaar' - the rear derailleur will be arriving later. WTF ? But, true to their word, by 16:30, I had the other derailleur in my paws. So, not an easy shipment but, despite the three deliveries required, STILL a fantastic turnaround. Well done guys.
  18. The ride or the "extra" ??????????????????????????
  19. Still waiting for some crim to try his luck - one promise - me or him ? - it's him. Oh, and it is not murder - it is self defence - not my fault the car kept changing direction (lol). I always carry a blade when I commute or go into any trail. And I assure you, I won't hesitate to use it - no conscisence whatsoever. Like the dude that got jumped in Cedara just before X-mas. Two perps - one klapped him on the head with a log - the other stabbed him in the chest with a broken bottle. Then they came at him with a knife - he disarmed one and stuck the knife in his back right up to the hilt. My hero - they found the perp a few ours later - sadly, not dead. THAT's the only language they understand. When I cycled in Natal many years ago, I regularly cycled thru Umgababa - became real dodgy - so I carried my 9mm. Perps seemed to sense something and I never had shaite. I take it if/when you get jumped, you won't expect anyone to come to your aid ?
  20. You are sadly a little correct - but it goes to prove - KILL DA VARKER DEAD - no problems, no compensation, no trauma. Well, I wouldn't have any. But reverse, go forwards, reverse, go forwards - a few times, just to be sure.
  21. Jeez Francois - take a pill dude - or, take yourself in hand and work off some of that frustration in there buddy - you're gonna pop a valve otherwise. None of this thread deserves your response - an honest concern and lot's of varied opinion. My one item of agreement is - "if you profess to offer a service, provide it". The world is a moeruva small place so one must be on the top of your game to survive. I take much of the rants at face value but, everything with a pinch of salt. However, I don't think you can compare Coen's problem with your wee spring. I think a small apology might be in order. Chill Bud.
  22. Rough idea - frame @ R15k - Reba XX fork @ R6200-00 - XTR Groupset @ R9300-00 ex Evans UK - I bought a Silverback Segma 29er for R18000-00 and used the ZTR wheels - the XT groupset went on to the Merida FLX (pictured above). Seat & grips were about R1,5k.Niner is insured for R45k and the Merida for R35k.
