  1. That said, be wary as directors know this is how the market reacts and (cough) can use this to manipulate the share price.
  2. I've been playing as a 'day trader' using the Nedbank Online Trading site. If you have the time and the energy it's fun. I dont use large amounts but kinda set myself goals like 'try and turn R5000 into R6000 within 2 weeks'

Want to be notified of all future rides and be part of the bicycle commuting community of Durban? Join the group here: http://www.facebook.com/groups/cmassdbn *********************************************** PLEASE READ ALL OF THE BELOW IF YOU ARE NEW TO CRITICAL MASS. *********************************************** THIS IS A VERY (EXTREMELY) SLOW AND CASUAL RIDE. We try our best to ride no faster than the slowest rider, to make this open to those of any ability. Normally this is around 10km/h. If you want to ride fast, you can help marshal. Anyone interested in helping marshal should make sure to meet next to the scuplture outside Nino's at the stadium at 545pm. The more help we can get the better. _____________________________________________ Critical Mass is a bicycle ride that takes place on the last Friday of every month in over 300 cities worldwide. Part protest and part celebration, but mainly a great way to highlight the awesomeness of getting around on 2 wheels, create awareness of bikes as an alternative and sustainable form of transport, build community and celebrate our love of bikes. This is a ride geared (excuse the pun) toward upping the awareness of bicycles as a viable commuting/transport method, it is open to ALL bicycle types and riders! _____________________________________________ Everyone participating should save an emergency number on their cellphone under ICE (In Case of Emergency) Here is the Critical Mass Ethos: - Critical Mass is NOT a race. - The CM movement aims to raise awareness about the viability of bicycles as a form of transport; the cyclist's right to share public space safely and the need for cycling infrastructure. Critical Mass Durban aims to bring more people back into the city. CM is about having fun, in a group, on wheels. - CM makes an impact because it is a group. The group moves slowly and must not be separated. When the mass moves through a traffic light, the mass must stay together, even when the light changes, or it is dangerous. If cars get caught in the mass, allow them space to exit to the right. ** Always try to keep a lane open to the right of the mass for cars to pass safely by - For CM to be safe and fun, we need to abide by some consensual rules: 1. Be safe Be aware of those around you and maintain the cohesion of the group. Nobody gets left behind. 2. Be responsible Make sure your bicycle works and that you have spares. Stick with the group and be aware of where the front and rear volunteer marshals are. Help each other - assist your fellow riders who need support 3. Be cool Have fun. Connect with the people around you. EVERYBODY is welcome to join the Mass. Answers to FAQs: - The route changes, but is around 20kms and easy. - The ride is free - All you need is you and your bicycle - please make sure your bicycle works and that you have basic spares - This ride is unofficial. - We may have volunteer support vehicles and marshals. Or we may not - Lights are highly recommended, as are helmets, according to national road laws.. the onus is on the individual concerned in all instances. Unless your mother is riding noone has the right to say anything about your choice in any of these matters. - If you have any other questions, inbox the hosts, or ask on the page and be inundated with ridiculous and humiliating comments by our esteemed members. - And if you are going to be an asshole to people in the city, motorists, or to people on the ride, don't come. 4. Finished murdering out my commuter ride.. Just need a black chain
  5. Tonight we ride! Critical Mass - The Rise of the 300! (25 Apr) Don't succumb to 'Durban Syndrome'.. this only happens once a month and you know it's always a lot of fun, especially if we ride slow While the rest of the country is freezing their butts off and wearing Uggs everywhere, we're on our bicycles loving the cooler breeze! Also... Tour Durban on Monday! The 45km looks like a good time, easy ride to Umdloti and back. What a rad long weekend we have in store. Let's get it started riiiiiiiiiiiiight! Oh.. rugby.. not a problem if you park elsewhere. You could try Kings Park swimming pool, Suncoast beach or casino, Pirates, or Mini Town and just wait for the mass to come past. Easy enough right? LET'S RIDE! More info and FAQ right here: https://www.facebook...849101188439899 FB Group: https://www.facebook...groups/cmassdbn Twitter: #CriticalMassDBN
  6. It might help to try and step back a little and try not see confrontational situations like this as an 'us vs them' scenario. It's not 'cyclists vs motorists'. The actions of this group so nicely identified for us by their spandex does NOT by any means represent the ideals and values of any another person, just like the behaviour of one taxi driver does not represent that of all other taxi drivers (who is also a motorist). Just like we've created the 'taxi driver' persona to represent the 'cars vs taxis' war. Not all taxi drivers are crap right? South Africans LOVE making excuses and shifting blame by playing the race card, the gender card, the political party card, and now the motorist card, creating separation by association whenever possible. These dudes smashing a driver are NOT part of your gang, because there is no gang. They don't "represent cyclists" or "give cyclists a bad name". There are bad cyclists and good cyclists.. good drivers and bad drivers. Life rolls on. Be the best you can be and ride like everyone's watching (cos they are).

    Not Dangerous

Excellent thread! Thought I'd add this video and article to it "There's been much talk about #commuting by bicycle but almost none about shopping by #bicycle" http://momentummag.c...g-can-take-off/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=442fvIFEgOo Dare to dream and imagine the ideals, work towards them, and they will happen. As usual SA gets everything 5 years later than the rest of the world, but it WILL get here eventually. Ok, maybe 10 years in this case Having commuted in NYC & Paris I totally get the vision and how things should be working. Durban is getting a lot of good groundwork done with their NMT (Non Motorised Transport) plan which includes over 40km of marked bicycle paths, some separated, some shared, but it's a good start (http://www.iol.co.za...urban-1.1572807)

    Durban cycling lanes

Very far, I ride on all of these every week! I think they'll all be finished by the end of the year at the rate they're going

  11. Is this definitely what happened? Did the taxi cross that white line?

  13. Some asked about what is being done in Durban. We are waiting on details for the official ride to be announced by Burry Stander's Facebook page Critical Mass DBN have been doing rides on every quarter moon as part of an enhanced 'Moonlight Mass' during the holidays. These have been averaging around 150+ the last few weeks. Most of our group have expressed that they will be riding this Saturday's '3rd Quarter Moon Mass' for Burry. HOWEVER, please note that this isn't an official memorial ride, just that it happens to be a ride already organised that people seem to be joining as it's a social city ride at a very slow pace. There is no police involvement or any kinda of road closure for this as the point of the ride has always been to encourage safe urban commuter bicycling and highlight the need for infrastructure to support this. By it's nature and definition (as well as for liability reasons) Critical Mass organisation is very loose.. It is literally just a bunch of bicyclists meeting at a point and deciding to ride somewhere together. (Lights and helmets are encouraged but not everyone adheres to these rules) 3rd Quarter Moonlight Mass Ride (every quarter moon at 8pm, Moses Mabhida Stadium) Meet at Moses Mabhida Stadium at 730pm to ride at 8pm on Saturday 5th January. Critical Mass Durban Group Critical Mass Durban monthly ride (last Friday of every month 6pm, Moses Mabhida Stadium)
  14. We leave from Moses Mabhida stadium at 8pm sharp. Ride along the promenade, esplanade and through town. Last ride at full moon was 115. Super leisurely and casual. Slow pace! Full details: http://m.facebook.com/events/253855321391611
  15. http://www.solomonsonline.co.za/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=136_4_18&products_id=704 is pretty much the only off the shelf option available in SA at the moment. Otherwise hit up Woodstock Cycleworks in CT: http://www.facebook.com/Woodstockcycleworks?fref=ts Camissa's bikes are very entry level if you know what I mean, but worth the price.
  16. The weather looks quite bad so I don't think as many are going to pitch tonight.. but don't forget Sunday nights MOONLIGHT MASS. It's similar to Critical Mass but happens every full moon! I actually enjoy this a lot more as the ride is later at night, we cruise through town on empty streets and just experience the city on 2 wheels. See you on Sunday at 8pm sharp at the Moses stadium: http://www.facebook.com/events/253855321391611/

  18. Awesome! Let's ride!
  19. Volume Thrasher on top, EighthInch Scrambler on the bottom The Scrambler is a few weeks old and came with a flipflop hub and freewheel cog. I put a fixed cog on the other side and removed the rear brake. Much cleaner, rides like a dream. Is there anyone else riding fixed in Durban?
  20. I realise this is a really old thread, but I did a search for 'track durban' and this is all I came up with. Just wanted to find out if anyone is riding track bikes in Durban, and if the Velodrome is in actual use these days?
  21. I need a tube with a SUPER long valve (60mm) and it seems my local shops don't carry something like this in 700x45C. I think the 'Conti Tour 28 All' would be what Im looking for. Can anyone recommend a store in SA that stocks it?? http://www.conti-online.com/generator/www/de/en/continental/bicycle/themes/tires/tubes/tour/tour_en.html http://prollyisnotprobably.com/Eeroprofile-thumb.jpg
  22. Im surprised noones picked up on this before, but I see you guys struggling here with duties and values.. The trick obviously is to get the goods marked/invoiced as a low value. Lots of 'importers' do this and Im guessing a large part of SARS job is reassessing bulk shipments marked with insanely low values. The next best and biggest trick is to get the goods sent and marked as 'used' or second-hand. This especially applies to clothing.. By law you cannot charge VAT or duty on second-hand goods. Wanna buy some expensive shoes overseas? Get them sent to a friend and have them unpackage them and repost. They're secondhand! Your friend opened them! You will pay R25 to collect from the post office, promise. The biggest trick is if you DONT have a friend overseas and it has to come straight from the supplier.. Too bad, you pay.
  23. How about buying from Amazon UK and USA using take2.co.za ? I've just ordered these new handlebars.. all incl.. R250 ! with delivery!!!
