  1. I have to agree. When last did any of these petitions do anything more than just create temporary awareness?

Who can even remember what the last petition was? e-tolls? Stop Malema? etc etc?

Rather spend the time and money on creating lasting awareness. Stop expecting other people to protect you and do it yourself. Awareness and preparedness is the best form of protection you can ask for.

I have signed it as a sign of support, not in the hope it will suddenly get the police to wake up. It's not like one of them fat asses will put down his piece of chicken and say "eish we must go there and catch the tsotsi's"

Mighty Maxxis, signing the petition is not only about getting signatures and presenting it to the police commissioner. It's also about awareness, because someone who is not aware of the attacks on cyclists gets referred to the site from a friend to sign the petition. He/she then reads about the spate of attacks on cyclists and is more conscientious the next time they go cycling. Think of the bigger picture.

  2. Hi fellow cycling enthusiasts,

Please can you all sign the petition to help protect our cyclists and get the police more involved. We are calling for attacks against cyclists whether it be in Pretoria East, Johannesburg or anywhere in South Africa to be investigated and be taken seriously.

  3. Hi Everyone, please note that this mass ride has been POSTPONED until further notice.

Manie Naude spoke to Capt Steenkamp from the Garsfontein prolice station today and we have to follow the correct procedures. We are going to meet with Capt Steenkamp first because they are in fact investigating the matter.

Please DO NOT attend the mass ride on Sunday.

  4. You should remember that east of Hans Strijdom and north of Garsfontein is actually in Boschkop's jurisdiction.

Also, please ensure that you obtain permission from the Tshwane metro for this - the Gauteng Traffic Police are being very anal and they are situated just off Hans Strijdom so they're close by.

Matt street, the vacinity where the incidents all happened, according to Captain Steenkamp of the Garsfontein police station is the dividing line of the police jurisdiction. On the Mooikloof side of Matt street where my incident happened is Boschkop police station's jurisdiction and on the Woodlands side of Matt street is Garsfontein police station's jurisdiction. That's why Garsfontein sent me to Boschkop to report the incident.

I agree on the permission, that has to be obtained.

  5. As I said before, lists all of this to the reporters. We can't just accept the lack of action by the police, if they don't want to do their work then lets use the media to make them sit upright and pay some attention.

Awesme, that's all I've been doing. I've been on Highveld stereo, 702 Talk radio, on the front cover of the Pretoria News today, inside the Beeld newspaper today, on various news websites and it will be in the Rekord on Tuesday. I've been doing nothing but trying to get the awareness of these incidents out there since it happened.

  6.

Is there a local MTB club in the area?

Are the other people that were attacked (hoping they are ok) on The Hub? Anyone know them?

I was the one shot in the helmet and we have a club called the Parkview Night Riders. We ride every Thursday night at 7pm leaving from the Parkview Shopping Centre. For the past two years we have finished our ride coming down Garsfontein road...which we won't be doing anymore.

I'm not sure how many of us will ride this week though, for obvious reasons.

  7. Hi Guys

Dose anyone have any of the mugged or hi-jacked victims details please could you forward it to me because according to the police there was only one incident that has been reported and head office can do any thing about this if its not a reoccurring event.

    Regards Luqmaan

I know Lugmaan, I also read that in the paper. I love the way the police play it down.

On Saturday I went to the Garsfontein police station and they told me it was not in their jurisdiction and I needed to go to the Boschkop police station. I then missioned over to the Boschkop police station to report the matter and I filed the report, but they said it was in fact Garsfontein's jurisdiction and for my convenience Boschkop will give me a case number, however they will transfer it back to Garsfontein and they will give me another case number. I then phoned Capt Steenkamp to clear this us and he told me that It IS in fact Boschkop's jurisdiction. He said Matt street is the border to the different police sections. Mooikloof side of Matt street (where my incident happened) belongs to Boschkop police station and Woodlands side of Matt street belongs to Garsfontein police station.

  8. I see that 702 is reporting 2 incidences but from the comments here on the Hub it said 4? it is just a case of the same event being reported by different sources here? Just curious.

Re. the idea of critical mass and offering a reward to the community I think that's a great idea. I would be happy to contribute what i can.

Uni, there were in fact 4 separate incidents over the past week. First it was the guy stabbed 5 times, then it was another guy shot at twice, then it was me that was shot in the helmet, and then the Cyclelab guy shot in the arm two days ago.

I agree with the reward and critical mass.

  9. All cyclist be aware of these criminals!!!!!! I am lucky to be alive today. The first bullet was fired at point blank range as I passed the two criminals. The powder burns are all around the entry wound. This bullet went through my arm and out the other side.

Michael, I'm glad you're ok. I was the one that was shot in the helmet. I'm trying to get as much media around this as possible. I've been interviewed by Pretoria News, Beeld and Rekord and at 16h20 today 702 Talk Radio is going to do a live interview with me.

We've got to make a big fuss about this to make more awareness and pressure on the police and government.

  10. http://carteblanche....storysubmission

here is the link to submit a story, suggest the guy who had his helmet shot should maybe submit it..

Thanks Kingalton, I have already submitted to Carte Blanche so we'll see what happens.

I'm meeting Pretoria News and Rekord today. I was also interviewed on 702 and it's going into the Beeld tomorrow. I'm doing my bit to get as much exposure to this as possible to stop these savage attacks!

  11. Noake, i am horrified, sorry dude. I am still a little rattled after you told me. Good luck guys in sorting this out. Noake, approach the papers dude!

Hey Spick, the papers as they have been coming to me. Someone from the Beeld is going to publish and article in the newspaper (probably tomorrow's Beeld) and then I have someone coming to see me today from eNCA...it's a start.

  12. I've been reading all these comments about taking the law into your own hands and carrying your own gun, but believe me until you're in this situation, by the time you try and reach for your gun it's too late. If I had been carrying a gun with me what was I supposed to do, stop and try shoot back? As soon as we noticed these guys were trying to attack us and as soon as we noticed that the one guy was pulling something out of his pocket we bolted. It was so quick. I was five or ten metres away from them when the first shot was fired, then another two. There would have been no time to draw a weapon it happens so quickly.

To answer another question posted, no I didn't feel or hear any bullet hitting my helmet. My cleat came out my pedal as I got a fright when they were trying to attack us and all I was concentrating on was getting the hell out of there and trying to clip back in. Only on Saturday after my morning ride did I notice that there was a hole in my helmet.

I have reported it to the police and I do have a case number. Capt Steenkamp told me, like Bianchi also said, they are going to patrol a van in the area on Thursday nights when we normally ride. Capt Steenkamp also said that it WILL happen again in that area if they have hit it before so please stay away from it guys.

  13.

How did you not realise it when it happened?

Cav, I have no idea how I didn't notice that. I didn't even hear it. We just sped off and rode like crazy. My cleat even came out I got such a initial shock. Afterwards I said to my mates that I don't know how he missed me as the first shot was 5-10 metres away from me, from behind. Evidently he didn't miss.
