  1. Hi Guys, if I have offended, I appologise. Not my intention to get anybodys back up. This whole thing started out of an interest to buy a light, but eventually built one myself. I do not claim to be a great designer or engineer. Johannes, sorry to have offended. I never intended to sell lights, and really did want to help you get your business of the ground with the offering of my services. I just got such an overwhelming response from my friends for lights, i thought it may be a great opportunity. With regards to Troutie, please see my email to him below and his response: < ="-" ="text/; =utf-8">< name="ProgId" ="Word.">< name="Generator" ="Microsoft Word 12">< name="Originator" ="Microsoft Word 12"><> ----- Original Message ----- From: Thys Meades To: Chris Hadaway Sent: Wednesday, July 22, 2009 10:00 AM Subject: six xpe R2 bike lite Hi Chris, hope that you are well. I am complete with my new light. I first wanted to check that you didn?t mind, as I based it on your light. If it?s ok with you, I want to post it on the forum, and give you credit of course! If you DO mind that I copied/based it on your design, then I will rather keep it to myself. Kind regards Thys His response < ="-" ="text/; =utf-8">< name="ProgId" ="Word.">< name="Generator" ="Microsoft Word 12">< name="Originator" ="Microsoft Word 12"><> Hi Thys. I dont mind at all , In fact I am quite pleased and look forward to seeing it are you happy with it . Cheers Chris I took this him being ok with my using a design based on his. I did use his beamshots in the uk (which would be exactly representative of the lights I would make) as I had nothing of my own, as far as copyright imfrigments, I am not sure that open domain forum material is copyrighted, but have mailed troutie to appologise for not asking his permission and to see if he would rather have me remove them. i have also asked him to let know if he would prefer me to remove the pocket rocket from my range of lights. (so guys out there with your heart set on them, rather wait till I hear back from Mr Trout) I am not afraid to eat a little humble pie, life if too short to bear grudges. Again, to all who have read the post, sorry If I have mislead or in anyway taken credit for something which has not been my doing. I did in the very first few lines of my post, give credit to trout for inspiration and advice. regards Thys
  2. Very tentative PRICES for Supernova lights. (and build kits) Please do not order yet. I have a massive race coming up and I have no stock of parts so this is for info only. I don't want you guys running off to buy a sigma Karma for a little less $$ and then settling for a lot less (light) I will let know when I am ready. Bear in mind, summer is coming so maybe this is gonna be for next winter only On the pricing.... I don't have much fat in there with regards to profit. The parts and secure shipping is flipping expensive and it takes about 8 to 12 hours to build a light and battery pack. So, comment all you like if you think it's pricey, I know it very good value. These prices are based on current ex rates and prices at suppliers currently. this WILL change in the future, like all things in life. I also included the build kits for the diyer out there who wants to build his/her own light and already has a battery pack, and only needs the light head. Looking fwd to the comments out there. 3. Mountain lion, YES! Troutie is the king of light building. You however are the reason I actually built my first light so THANKS!!! I read your light build post.. and the rest was history.. I spoke to Trout about his design and if he was happy that I base my design on his. He said it's cool I think mine is smaller than his. I actually mention and thank him at the beginning of this post. the one you see (pocket rocket) was made locally here in PE and it came out quite nice. I have a guy currently working on locally CNC'ing them here for me. Once I have price, production starts. thysmeades2009-07-31 01:18:54
  4. ok, cool. well explained. I will however still build in series as it is best suited to my drivers. If however after 35000hrs it stops working, I think you got your moneys worth.
  5. Supernova Altair MCE - Enjoy.. images removed Sorry guys thysmeades2009-07-31 08:57:29
  6. Hi Gents, a group response Madmarc : the car is about 70 m from the light Builder: I will post actual runtimes when I finally do the test. You can drive the LED's at 700mA (max recommended) but I under drive them for a longer runtime. I have heard of guys running them at 1000mA with no problem, other than heat!! and shorter runtimes. Capricorn: you are right, in series, if one blows for whatever reason, the whole light will stop working. LEDs typical life span is 35000hrs so you are pretty safe there. I would rather have them in series than parallel, because if one blows in parallel, the remaining 5 will have to handle the same current, (ie the current increases per led) which could blow another, then 4 will have to handle the same current and another could blow and ...... can you see where this is going Slowbee: the driver has 5 level settings, on low it will last 20 - 30 hours plus. as I said earler, actual runtimes and beam shots will be posted in due course. Borriz: Thanks Supertorro: Please do post your lights, it's for the enjoyment of the hobby that we do this and sharing it with our mates. The only way I learned was to see other guys posts. So lets see what you are hiding there!! Just to whet your guys appetite for more, below are beamshots of my best light yet. It's a triple Cree MCE called the Supernova Altair MCE. It will blow most things out the water. I will put the pics in a new post, for some reason I cannot past the pics here. thysmeades2009-07-31 00:35:43
  7. This a beam shot of a mate who has one in the UK. Exactly the same as mine. He has 6 narrow optics! hows this for a beaut beam!! image removed thysmeades2009-07-31 08:58:21
  8. Bwa ha ha ha!! Nice one!
  9. they will be cheaper than you think. I am in this to enjoy it, not to make money. Once I am ready and have a little time on my hands, with stock most importantly, I will post prices, beamshots etc and then you guys can decide if it's value or not!! T

  11. Hi Gents and Ladies, at long last I have something to show you with regards to my many hours of research into the black art of light building. I have many people to thank with regards to all the skills I have aquired. The two lights I have to show you are detailed below. Any questions, drop me a PM or email on thysmeades@gmail.com. The details: The Supernova Triple Star is a torch body with three Cree XRE?s (about 660 lumens at 1000 mA) Thanks Morne/Riaan for helping me with the machine of this! The Supernova Pocket Rocket based on a design by light building genius ?Troutie? from the UK. Six Cree XPE?s (about 1100 lumens at 700 mA) Special thanks to Morne from Executive engineering who painstakingly made it by hand. This little light is super small?..hence the name.. Versatile for helmet or handlebar due to the flat profile. I home anodized it ?Tangerine? Came out speckled due to the ?special? material used. Thanks to Sean for the dodgy material! Both got laser engraved by Edge engravers here in PE. Special thanks to them. Very cool bunch of guys Both driven by Taskled?s drivers. (best light drivers in the world!) Thanks for all the advice George. No orders please, (other than those who I have already spoken to) I have too much on my plate before the trans bav. After that we can talk. Comments are however very welcome J thysmeades2009-07-29 06:23:01
  12. Hi guys, can anybody assist in sourcing waterproof/resistant DC connectors for light building. Battling like anything to find some. kind regards Thys
  13. Hi, please let me have a small copy of the drawing so that I can comment. I have a few designs I have worked on and am in fact annodizing one tonight! I will be able to assist if can see what you are talking about. I am lucky to have a few mates with machinery to help me with all my creations. looking fwd to hearing from you. thysmeades@gmail.com
  14. hi guys, can anybody tell me how to glue / solder emitters onto the heatsinks. I am looking at joining an MCE bare emitter onto the star heat sink. Looks like a tricky job if it is indeed a solder job. If it is solder, does on put a little bit of thermal paste on the bottom of the emmiter itself to ensure the heat is dissipated onto the star and then the heatsink?
  15. Haven't tried one yet' date=' but it could be done with a maxflex. Run 2 x (4s + 2s), in other words 2 parallel branches of 6 chips in series, and set your drive current to 1200mA. You'll get 600mA per branch, not quite maximum but close enough. You'll have to run a monster housing to get enough heatsink area to cool it properly though. Post pics when you're done [/quote'] hi droo, can i buzz you, I am confused about what you mentioned above. It would be great if you could explain to me about the 4s + 2s etc. is a triple not 3 lights? regards Thys
  16. hi jean, I haven't tried a triple MCE (series) but the recommendation from George would be a bflex using from a 14.4V battery pack. I actually asked him the same question. regards Thys
  17. Hi Jean, the price is $35 which includes shipping. No taxes involved. Thys PS: I received mine about 6 weeks ago but unfortunately it developed a fault. I am sending it back for repair / replacement. You can also get these from Cutter is Oz.
  18. Hi Guys, had anybody had issues with the dx website in the last couple of days.I have ordered some stuff but now the site is just down all the time... can you tell me if you have battled as well?? www.dealextreme.com thysmeades2009-06-14 09:30:12
