  1. And in the meantime you can pass on the gift to other people because you are not a pu55y. Well done on being so brave. Forget about the government (and the some of the stupid covid rules) and the WHO - there is more than enough evidence to suggest it is a good idea for everone to cover their faces in public. You do not have to give a**** at all for other people because the age of civility is gone.
  2. I am totally with you Chris! I was very much against all the panic farming around virus, but exactly two weeks ago a close friend died after battling this thing for a week in ICU and last week a second - much younger friend followed - changes the perspective somewhat and made me resolute to do my best to not pick this thing up now. I think keeping with a few simple rules like the masks/washing hands/cleaning surfaces and screening temps (at work) is the minimum we can do. I am an essential business and we set up most employees at home - but about 18 of them has to come in and I feel very safe with all that because EVERYONE is being as safe as possible. Obviously we will all get the bug over the coming years - but now (or the next few months) is not a good time. The economy HAS to open up - this gov cannot look after people inany case. Sorry about all the typos - my spectacles are hiding somewhere
  3. I did not see a single person pull up their masks - no one that passed me within a meter did so either - most cyclist/runners/walkers had masks around their necks - I saw runners put them on as I approach - but no cyclists did - as in none - at all. Anyone doing the atlantic road from sea point to hout bay will attest to that. There were several bunches of cyclist riding abreast and chatting - all with the masks around their necks - which helps nothing
  4. No - material/surgical masks wil not to protect you if worn casually - thats what you will need a n95 with all the rigmaroll around handling. BUT THAT IS NOT THE POINT - it is proven beyound doubt that a material mask does reduce the distribution of droplets & aerosol FROM you to others SIGNIFICANTLY. But carry on - its too much to ask you to keep others in mind - they can mos stay at home as you say. It is actually law to wear one - but I suppose with all the other stupid senseless rules going about - you can also ignore this one?
  5. I am also over the fear mongering and want to be out there cycling - but - NO- you can help curb transmissions by covering you mouth and nose - and everyone around you is not in the safe zone - it is not a big ask or is it? I do not want to get this damn thing now because it will ruin my business and more than 30 people's food on the table - plus I am in the age group that gets hit the most. BUT I have had enough about sitting at home running down my immune system - so would like to cucle - but it seems it is impossible for people to do the safer thing? Like you say everyone gives a toss because they are fit and healthy - good luck then...
  6. yip - it could even be lower - were you out there? I lost count somewhere in the 50's and only 2 (excluding me) had their masks on. 4% is not really relevent - what is - is that almost no one covered their faces...but we can argue the 4% if that makes you feel good
  7. *asking for a friend* Why cycle in packs where not a single person has a masked on? This morning a group of 4 guys passed me near Camps Bay - none with any form of covering their nose/mouth and the leader coughing his lungs out over everyone- me included. Is it too much to ask? I counted mask wearers after this incicdent - less than 4% had their faces covered. It sort of makes it hard for those of us in the "danger" age group (50->) to be out cycling - just because of the majority of cycling community beig utterly selfish. And if you think you cannot get it or that you are so much better than anyone else - good luck - no one knows! I lost 2 friends in as many weeks - the one just older than 40 with no co-morbidities. But even if you are a super human - why would you willingly want to put others at risk?
  8. Karman is obese = disabled then ? And people with arthritis? Should I send in my Xrays to qualify as "somewhat" physically challenged. It is a complicated can of worms that has been opened up - I want to do it on an e-bike but I would also feel a bit P*ssed off when being passed up Suikerbossie like I passed people today...
  9. Taken - but the Cape Town Cycle Tour is not a "race" it is a funride - in any case from groups 4 onwards I've done the Comrades - ther is zero to compare...to start off you have to qualify for the Comrades - if the same rule is applied to the CTCT then only half the entries should be allowed - no ..
  10. I agree - We were nor supposed to get times (but i did?) also - I carried my spare battery all the way - I only saw one other doing that - the rest picked them up along the route (some guy with a road e-bike had 2 stashed on route) . If you are not using your own (body's) energy - at least be forced to carry it with you! I DO NOT THINK THAT E_BIKES SHOULD EVER BE PUT IN A COMPETITION WITH CYCLISTS - whether that is for placing or timing. re-speed limiting - my bike cuts out the engine somewhere before 30k/hr - but obviously I can pedal it faster than that - like going downhill after Suikerbossie. I did leave my assist level at the middle setting after suikerbossie - but it was of no consequence as the speed was higher than the cut - off speed. It gets complicated - but maybe have a "too fast" cutoff at the cutoff points - if you are on an ebike and you are on track for under 4 hours you have to wait there until your projected time is more than 4hrs? Just an idea - not easy but would be easier if e-bikes had different colour numbers? We should not be there to irritate - just partake. I do not understand the idea of racing with a motorized bicycle against cyclists- whats are one actually proving (that your battery is bigger ?)
  11. Also - I know of at least one e-bike that was unregulated as far as the speed limit was concerned... (not mine So there is some things to think of - If people on e-bikes are going to behave like ***** we will loose the privilege
  12. I always feel I should apologise (and actually do sometimes) when overtaking - there will always be 2 kinds of e-bike riders - those that want to race and set the shortest time and those who are grateful for a tool that lets us get a share of the fun... - ....
  13. Hi Slowbee I did notice some of my fellow e-bike rider shouting at people to keep left - but most people shouting that were on regular bikes - by far! (Just as dangerous as doing that on an e-bike). Most of the 2x around groups took care - but one big peloton came racing screaming and shouting - and swearing past the slow groups at double the speed the slow pokes were doing - WAY more dangerous - sorry...
  14. Long story - I am probably the stereotypical e-bikerider. Mid 50's and overweight. I nearly did not ride as I still suffer from the damage done by 2 serious falls down staircases 3 weeks apart. First off - big ups to all the cyclists on route - I did not hear one snide remark etc. I set out to stay in the factory setting for "eco mode" as much as possible (untill my knee and hip would kis out) and would (and did not) ask cyclist to get out of my way on uphills etc - I sat behind and waited for a space to move past. I think most of the 6F group caught up with the 6b-e groups pretty soon. The effect of the wind etc just seems to be almost nothing on the e-bike (even in eco mode). I did hit the next mode up on SuikerbossieI -not proud of it. For those counting stats and used up about 920W of battery (one full 500W and 60% from a 700) and weigh 131Kg, average 24.something and finished in about 4Hrs 53 Mins (4 hrs 40 moving time). I finished a good hour quicker than my best time on a mountain bike. Will do the e-bike thing again next year with less body weight - not to be quicker but just to hopefully be in even less pain (a normal bike is out of the question health wise) It was great! THANKS FOR LETTING US MIX IT UP WITH THE REAL CYCLISTS! PS - I noticed a few e-bikes that had numbers a lot higher up than 6F - also a few constant power e-bikes - you need to "pedal" to get the motor turning - but with absolutely no resistance.
  15. With Specialized range calculator for a bike with 500Wh battery, a rider of 168 cm , 60kg: He/She will have to keep to 15km/h for the battery to last 110km So no advantage really - but it will help people with a disability or physical issue to be part of the fun - trust me it is mathematically impossible to do a sub 3 hour on a ebike (that sticks to the rules) - unless you are fit enough to do it easily on a dikwiel - which an ebike becomes when there is no more battery.
