  4. Thanks guys, I'll give the pads a rub down and clean the disc. I had contamination on my pads and discs on my previous bike but with different results which led me to pose the question. The glazing issue makes sense as I don't think I bedded the brakes in properly when I got the bike.
  5. I have a set of Avid Juicy 5's on my Stumpjumper and I am experiencing really bad "shudder" from the rear brake. During the shudder they tend to squeal a little too. I dont know whether the pads are contaminated or if its merely what the Avids do. Checked discs and they are straight so dont think the prob lies there. Have any other users out there had the same problem if so whats remedy?
  6. Dont even consider mechanicals. Once you have experienced hydraulic brakes you will never look back. I had a Specialized Stumpjumper which came with Shimano Deore hydraulics. Before I got the bike I was thinking that the brakes were the first thing i was going to upgrade. Well I had the bike for 3 years, 1 brutal Epic, countless races and thousands of Km's and the only servicing was replacing the pads. They never faded, squealled, shuddered no matter what the circumstance. I was very impressed. My previous Trek had Hayes which never impressed me, tended to fade when hot. My new current Stumpy has Juicy's on and they are also impressive. If you can, hold out and spend the extra on hydraulics and seriously look at the Shimano's or Avids.

  12. Hey Spaceboy I will approach this from a non techincal angle. I ride a R3 and a mate of mine rides a Litespeed. I come from a mtb background so am not engrossed in the "roadie" technicallities of the debate. Because my mate and I are more or less the same height we were out on a ride one day and swopped bikes. What struck me immediately was how comfortable the Litespeed felt. The ability to smooth the ride was almost uncanny but at the same time it did feel very racy. Getting back onto the R3 felt like, to put it into car terms, clmbing from an Aston Martin into a Ferrari. The ride more plush but certainly no less racy. So, in hindsite if I had a choice over I probably would buy a Litespeed. As much as I love the R3 the LS just had something special.
