  1. Does anyone know where i can have a manitou fork serviced in the Pretoria area?
  2. Same thing happened to me on the single track near Big Red Barn. I was riding on single track and they were running in the path in front of me. Next moment the last one turns around, both feet up in the air and pointed straight at my face, it was only about a meter or so in front of my bike, so it happened so fast, luckily i ducked and it went over my head. I am now pretty cautious when they are around. And yes everyone makes fun of you!!!
  3. I am looking for a tech support package for the Epic. This will be my first Epic, so if there is someone who has done it before, who would you recommend? The ones I've got so far is: CycleLab - R4500 Tool Up Cycles - R3500
  4. I'm in! Doing 4 day solo ride.
  5. Ok i have now narrowed down my shopping to these two bikes. I can get them both at exactly the same price. The catch comes in: The Giant i can get with tubeless conversion already on it. The Scott with original tyres. But in my opinion, the Scott is a better spec bike than the Giant. Also the Scott is 3x10 gear ratio wheras the Giant is only 2x10. So which one do i go for and why??? Scott Spark 940 - http://www.scott-sports.com/global/en/products/227690/scott-spark-940-bike/;jsessionid=3390CE2328C50DE853FEF90161661246 Giant Anthem X1 - http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-za/bikes/model/anthem.x.29er/12778/59366/
  6. I think that depends who your surgeon is. I went to Daan du Plessis and he has a name to keep up, so his success rate is pretty good. I don't think it's the surgery itself that goes wrong, its post op rehab. One has to start physio and exercises immediately(obviously only to the level your legs permit), and not train too hard too fast. Has to be gradual introduction back into training for a rather long period. Otherwise you'll end up back where you were as result of overtraining. I'll be the guinea pig as so many people told me not to do the surgery whilst others said it was better to do it. I must add that i did try almost everything else before opted to do the surgery. I had physio, rest(3 months no exercise), strengthen glutes, legs, core etc, got innersoles from podiatrist, BG Fit done, foam roller, cortison injections, only thing i didn't try was lynotherapy.
  7. I think ITB has become my worst enemy... So true what everybody said, get help soon!!! the sooner you treat it, correctly, the better your chances of sorting it out before it gets beyond the point of repair. Also invest in a foam roller, best invention ever for ITB. I agree with going to a physio who is cycling related. I am now one week post op , started swimming last night as i cannot cycle or run, and it went ok. I am looking after this thing as much as possible, they say the reason why most ops fail is because people don't do rehab correctly afterwards and start training too early.
  8. The animals went crazy the day after we left! And some tips on our first night by Ranger Nick and Tough guy Tim aka TGT:
  9. Yellowood... Enough said!
  10. This event is a definite must do for every mountainbiker. Absolutely loved every second of the weekend. We had 5-star treatment from the moment we arrived till the moment we left. Awesome routes and scenery, great venue, loved the game drives and entertainment at night. Well done to all the organisers! What an event!
  11. I'm still trying to figure out how on copy a part of your post and then reply on it... But thanks for the reply.
  12. Hi All What are your thoughts on the Continental Race King 2.2 UST tyres? For a friend of mine who is just average mountainbiker and the all round weekend warrior. I used to have Mountain King 2.2 but had a couple of side wall punctures, so not sure about these other ones either... Let me know! Thanks
  13. Ok so Sani2C done! What an awesome race. Some of the best single track i've ever done. Definitely worth doing. The food is great, had hot showers all the time, massage facilities and a whole lot of people in good spirit! the guys that stayed in the tent next to us, even managed to pack themselves 3 bottles of red wine in their black box!
  14. Haha!!! Very funny...
  15. 1. How well do you climb - I'm an average mountain biker, so end up in the middle of the field with a race... on Sani it happened more than a couple of times that everyone else walked a climb and i rode it to the top... (keep in mind, this is in the middle of the field...) My method is, i ride till my bike comes to a stand still, and i have to walk, struggling with ITB, so i walk/run as little as possible, especially on hills. 2. How good are your technical abilities. only one word - flatout! (Has landed me in hospital a couple of times... ) I try everything, don't succeed at all of them... 3. Where in the field do you want to finish. I just want to finish... in one piece...
  16. haha very funny... Does Andy Shleck even know what a MTB is?
  17. My bike is too old and rather entry level. I love the fork its got on though, but i did add that afterwards. If the frame wasn't so heavy, i would have considered doing that. The geometry and everything just works really superbly for me at the moment.
  18. Hi All Ok i have read most topics on the Epic but am still really unsure as to what bike i should ride for the Epic next year. It will be my first Epic and based on the following details, please give some thoughts as to which bike you would suggest and why. I am 1.75m tall, weigh just over 50kg and currently ride a hard tail which i must add, i love it! did the Sani2C this year and the bum was the least of my problems... Then i have spoken to a couple of guys, read a lot of articles and it looks like the most say soft tail bikes, irrespective of 26' or 29'. Now i went and looked: Esther Suss, Sally Bigham, Karien van Jaarsveld and Ariane Kleinhans all rode hard tails at the Epic. Looking at the picture... well looks like it was good option. Is this maybe because the ladies are lighter than the men? Because looks like most of the top men all had soft tails... I need to buy a new bike before then, and it will have to last me a couple of years. Budget about R20-R25k Please give your thoughts....
  19. I would LOVE to do the BC Bike race in Columbia, Canada. http://www.bcbikerace.com/the-journey Obviously having the right K-Way gear would make it even better! (Ladies category) (If i'd known how to post pics and videos on the hub, i would have... ) The links will have to do for now...
  20. Thanks everyone, i will give Kobus a try, I actually know a couple of triathletes that go to him.
  21. I just saw this post and now read each one... So here is my story: I never used to run much, cycled only on weekends until last year August. Got an entry for Sani2C and decided to train harder. I started a training program which included runs 3 days per week and cycling the other days. By the end of September i was on the treadmill one night in the gym and did a whole exercise afterwards with no pain. When i woke up that next morning, i could barely walk, let alone get up or down the stairs. Started physio, included treatment and rehabilitation for about three months of which i only still cycled about one and then stopped all training completely. Needless to say, it got a bit better but didn't go away completely. Eventually went for a sonar which didn't pick up anything on the ITB... Confused???? because then what is it? Left the physio and just didn't run at all. Got back into cycling slowly in January and things went really well. Did Sani and guess what... on day 1 of Sani it acted up again(my guess - carrying that black crate all the way to the truck) So had it strapped by local physio and decided to get help after Sani. So now i've been to a podiatrist, bought new running shoes after finding out that my left leg is 6mm shorter than the right and severe pronation on the left... got inner soles for the new shoes and went running for the first time in months this morning... Couldn't even do 2.5km when it hurt so bad i actually felt like crying! Struggling to walk at work now and steps are a horror! Especially down. I really need help now, i've tried ice, heat, stretching, i use my foam roller each time i get off the bike, do gym workouts to improve muscle strength on my legs and lower back as well as glutes. I am pretty much crying in my hands from frustration as this has now cost me close to R10 000 and NO IMPROVEMENT! I'm not even sure that it is in fact my ITB... As the sonar couldn't pick up swelling or anything... Both physios are convinced it is the ITB... Please give some thoughts or Doctors names in Pretoria or JHB that you would recommend. The ITB acts up seriously when i run, can't even do 2.5km and come to complete halt from pain. Cycling it only acts up on very long rides and lots of hills or standing.
  22. Best thing that ever happened to me was my boyfriend putting on my cleat peddals and saying to me: "just try them, i'll take them off before the race tomorrow..." I rode around with them a bit and he taught me to fall over, cleat out, the whole story and when it came to please will you take them off now, he just refused... Never looked back from there!
  23. So glad for this thread... I am sitting with the same question... I am a lady also had hardtail my entire life(26'), absolutely love it! But now everyone is telling me that i'll be crazy to attempt the Epic on a hardtail, they even had a go at me at the Sani2C... So now i'm terribly confused as to whether get a duel suspenion, 29'er or just stay on hardtail... So please keep the advice coming and say why you pick the one you do...
  24. Have your behind measured and then buy accordingly... I have a Specialized Ariel saddle and it is the best money i have ever spent! Although being a MTB saddle, i put it on a road bike, did the MTN Panorama tour, never had a sore bum at all... Came back home, put it back on my MTB, did the Sani2C and no sore bum or saddle sores at all!! Specialized really put a LOT of effort into their products! And no i don't own a Specialized MTB, yet... I have a friend who worked in a bike shop for couple of years, and he said stay the hell away from Fizik saddles... but its like everyone said, we all differ and eventually it comes down to what will work for you.
